Responsibilities
- Reviews charts to determine urgency of condition and initiate care as necessary.
- Collections all historical and physical data necessary for the medical staff to make clinical therapeutic decisions.
- Performs additional measurements of phorias and tropias, near point of convergence, fusion.
- Familiar with tonography.
- Performs and records various ocular measurement tests.
- Designs care plans and implements treatment as delegated by the medical staff.
- Oversees and evaluates other ophthalmic technicians as assigned.
- Maintains and updates EPIC EMR knowledge and skills including appointment scheduling.
- Expertly takes phone calls on eye issues including prescription renewal.
- Trains other technical staff as needed.
- Maintains and updates instrumentation, supplies and drugs.
- Surveys technical instruments and equipment, implements repair, and arranges for service calls.
- Inventories and orders supplies and drugs following protocol and as appropriate.
- Participates in research clinical trials as assigned including participating as a mask examiner, performing refraction, visual acuity, etc.
- Agree to review the study documentation and certify for each study assigned.
- Able to competently assist, scrub, and circulate for all eye center procedures including Lasik surgery.
- Participates in intramural and extramural educational programs as a speaker and teaching assistant.
- Participates in departmental research as needed.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma.
- Completion of an academic program for ophthalmic technician is a plus.
- JCAHPO Certification as ophthalmic assistant (COA) or ophthalmic technician (COT) is a plus but not required.
- Must have sound and basic ocular knowledge.
- Manual dexterity, communications, precision, and accuracy.
- Ability to communicate well with patients and all levels of staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree and/or advanced medical training is a plus but not required.
