Ophthalmic Tester

Responsibilities
- Tests and measures eye function to assist Ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases
- Records initial history, including present/chief complaint, past ocular history, family history, systemic illness, medications, allergies, and drug reactions
- Tests and records patient’s far and near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception
- Measures intraocular pressure of eyes (glaucoma test), excluding applanation
- Performs ancillary tests such as lensometry, corneal topography, A scans, B scans, keratometry, fundus photography, slit lamp photography, specular misoscopy, and visual fields (including central and peripheral vision); records results
- Transcribes physician’s dictation into patient chart when applicable
- Knows ocular pharmacology such as anesthetics, steroids, antibiotics, mydriatics and cycloplegics, epinephrine, miotics, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories
- Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes
- Collections and processes specimens for appropriate laboratory testing
- Prepares and stocks exam rooms; assists with exams
- Triage emergency cases appropriately into physician’s schedule, maintains patient flow
- Prepares patient and procedure room; assists ophthalmologist with in-office procedures
- Performs first-level maintenance on ophthalmic equipment and notifies office manager of any equipment malfunctions
- Utilizes as appropriate, infection control techniques and universal precautions
- Performs other tests and measurements as requested by Ophthalmologist
- Maintains confidentiality and professional demeanor at all times
Requirements
- One-year certificate from college or technical school; minimum two years experience as an ophthalmic assistant or equivalent combination of education and experience
- CPR certified
- Excellent communicator – both verbally and written
- Outgoing, loves interacting with patients every day
- Comfortable providing white-glove service and responding quickly to patients’ needs
- A dependable problem solver – able to stay calm in stressful situations
- A positive, can-do attitude and works well in collaborative environments
- Flexible – able to roll with the punches and accept change
- Knowledgeable in ocular pharmacology such as anesthetics, steroids, antibiotics, mydriatics and cycloplegics, epinephrine, miotics, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (a plus, but not required)
