Ophthalmic Technician or Ophthalmic Clinical Specialist I - COA Certified

About the role

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa Health Care is seeking an Ophthalmic Clinical Specialist I to perform technical and optical testing as part of the complete ocular exam, obtain patient histories, medications, and allergies for the supervising physician, and assist with various procedures.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate refraction competency with optometrist.
• Transpose spectacle prescriptions from minus to plus cylinder.
• Know basic pharmacology of ocular medications and instill multiple diagnostic drops during the exam, per protocol.
• Perform manual keratometry testing.
• Answer phone calls, triage patient complaints, and work them into clinic as needed.
• Able to perform advanced applanation tonometry for corneal irregularity problems or patients with high astigmatism.
• Absorb ocular specimens using various types of media for microbiology.
• Maintain technological equipment, call for repairs and troubleshoot as needed. Maintain equipment as needed by changing bulbs, arranging repairs.
• Assist physicians with procedures including obtaining cultures, tap and injection procedures.
• Aid in scheduling procedures.
• Ensure quality control testing is complete and documented.
• Participate in the interview process for new hires and provide feedback.
• Consult with clinic leadership regarding staffing for the day and week.
• Address patient complaints or serve as a resource for service recovery.
• Function as an Epic super user.
• Train other staff.

Requirements

• Three years of health care experience involving direct patient care including some use and maintenance of specialized medical equipment, or a combination of related education and experience.
• COA certification through JCAHPO
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated leadership qualities and abilities

Qualifications

• Three years of health care experience involving direct patient care including some use and maintenance of specialized medical equipment, with at least one year of the prior experience at the level of a Clinical Technician II or equivalent, or a combination of related education and experience.
• Experience with Medical Terminology
• Experience with Public Contact/Customer Service
• Eye Clinic Experience
• JCAHPO certified (COA) within 18 months of hire, and maintain certification.

Benefits

External hires only, in addition to your base salary, we are offering a sign-on incentive of $1,500, payable in one installment. The payment will be made on the first of the month following completion of 60 days of employment. Should you terminate employment within 24 months, you will be responsible for the prorated repayment of the sign-on incentive. The signed agreement will be processed upon hire. Current UI employees are not eligible.

Schedule

Preferred schedule Monday – Friday, 8:00a-5:00p. Schedule may be modified to fit candidate and clinic needs.
