Ophthalmic Diagnostic Technician 1 (Full time) - BPEI - Plantation, FL

About the role

The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is currently seeking a full-time Ophthalmic Diagnostic Technologist 1 to work in their Plantation campus.

Responsibilities

• Performs ophthalmic testing, measurements, or specialty-specific procedures in accordance with training, protocols, and scope of practice.
• Prepares patients for diagnostic studies, treatments, or procedures, explaining processes and addressing patient questions.
• Obtains and documents patient histories, clinical findings, test results, and procedural data in the electronic medical record.
• Operates ophthalmic instruments, imaging systems, or specialty equipment relevant to assigned clinical services.
• Aids physicians and care teams with examinations or procedures, including pre- and post-procedure patient support.
• Identifies and communicates abnormal findings or technical issues following established escalation protocols.
• Ensures exam rooms, procedure areas, and equipment are prepared, maintained, and compliant with safety and infection control standards.
• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Basic Life Support (BLS).
• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Retinal Angiography (CRA) or OCT-Certified (OCT-C).
• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
• Works effectively with patients of all age groups.
• Presents a professional appearance.
• Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills.
• Analyzes, organizes, and prioritizes tasks while working under pressure to meet deadlines.

• Demonstrates competency in all ophthalmic subspecialty patient workups.
• Displays competent knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility.
• Knows imaging instruments and modalities based on diagnosis.
• Knowledgeable in computer software for all imaging modalities.
• Demonstrates core knowledge of standardized imaging protocols based on diagnosis.
• Displays competent understanding of standardized probe positioning and scan labeling.
• Demonstrates competency and understanding of appropriate selection of ultrasound probes.
• Performs standardized ultrasound protocols.
• Displays competent knowledge of refractometry.
• Maintains OPS and JCHAPO certifications.
• Uploads all imaging modalities and ultrasound scans to the PACS platform.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
