About the Office of Commissioner Rodney Ellis
Harris County is divided into four precincts, each represented by an elected commissioner. Commissioner Rodney Ellis serves Precinct One, a diverse urban precinct covering 363 square miles with approximately 1.17 million residents. The precinct's population is roughly 33% African American, 38% Latino, 21% Anglo, 6% Asian, and 2% other or multiple races.
Precinct One includes notable landmarks such as Downtown Houston (including the Downtown Harris County Courthouse Complex, Toyota Center, Minute Maid Park, and BBVA Compass Stadium), the 263-acre NRG Park Complex, the Texas Medical Center, and several higher education institutions like Houston Community College, Rice University, Texas Southern University, the University of Houston, and the University of St. Thomas.
Precinct One manages over 21 parks, 10 community centers, numerous hike-and-bike trails, three maintenance service centers, and several area offices, providing a wide array of services to residents.

About the Road & Bridge Division
The Road & Bridge Department’s mission is to provide responsive public service while maintaining Precinct One roads, bridges, hike-and-bike trails, and county right-of-ways to improve mobility and quality of life for constituents.
Responsibilities
As an Operator II in the Road & Bridge sub-division, you will:
- Maintain county roadways, right-of-way, sidewalks, curbs, ditches, and culverts.
- Repair potholes, sinkholes, and street curbs.
- Blow and clean culverts and inlets in the neighborhoods served.
- Grade ditches and install/repair culverts to ensure proper water flow to flood control ditches.
- Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and county safety standards.
- Provide assistance during emergency events (e.g., flooding, ice storms).
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) years of experience operating heavy machinery/equipment in a road and bridge environment.
- Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B).
Skills
- Knowledge of driving laws and roadway construction.
- Ability to perform pre-trip visual safety inspections of vehicles and heavy equipment (checking fluid levels, tires, maintaining cleanliness, and performing routine maintenance).
- Experience operating heavy equipment, including:
- Dump Trucks
- Dozer
- Excavators
- Front end loader and backhoe
- Gradall
- Graders
- Jack Hammers
- Maintainers
- Water Trucks
- Proficiency with shovels, rakes, and other equipment.
- Basic computer skills, including checking email, time-entry, and online training.
Physical Demands & Environmental Factors
- Stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, walking, standing, climbing, driving, and lifting up to 60 pounds.
- Indoor and outdoor work in all environments, including inclement weather.
- Exposure to heat, cold, loud noise, and dust.
Pay
Up to $24.00 per hour.
Schedule
Work hours are 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM and are subject to change as needed.
