About the role
Operates continuous wire drawing machine and auxiliary equipment to produce aluminum alloy wire from rod to a specified diameter, finish, and length.
Responsibilities
- Secure proper rod for drawing by informing the material handler and retain proper copies of rod tags.
- Set up necessary arrangement of dies in machines to obtain the proper finish diameter wire desired.
- Visually inspect drawing dies for defects and correct size before use; obtain necessary dies from the die polisher.
- String rod into machine by pointing the end of the rod through the first die, threading through each die, and winding wire around capstans.
- Clamp end of wire to final capstan, wind wire around it, then thread wire around festoon sheaves, pulleys, and to the dual take-up unit.
- Check machine setup before starting; set footage counters, finish speed, and fleeter speed for the wire size being drawn.
- Obtain die string-ups from die charts at the machine or die shop.
- Monitor winding during operation and adjust tension and fleeter speeds as necessary.
- Change loaded bobbins from the take-up unit after automatic transfer to an empty bobbin.
- Visually inspect all wire drawn, cut off bad ends, tag bobbins, and secure the end of the bobbin.
- Mount required size bobbins onto the take-up after removing loaded bobbins; keep idle side loaded with an empty bobbin.
- Maintain adequate flow of lubrication and coolants to ensure proper machine operation and wire quality.
- Check wire diameter with micrometer after string-up or die changes to ensure proper finished wire.
- Change pay-off rod coils by welding ends together to maintain continuous drawing operation.
- Stop machine immediately for breakouts, missed transfers, or improper operation; restring wire from the breakout point.
