About the role
As an Operations Supervisor Trainee, you will be enrolled in a one-year paid program designed to prepare you to manage a front-line team within our North American operation. This includes leading employees and managing operations at one of our many facilities. The program provides field-based training, shadowing seasoned experts from Operations, Commercial, and Support functions, and comprehensive leadership training. You will also gain visibility and engagement with leaders from other programs across our global operations. Occasional travel to U.S. locations may be required during training. Upon completion, you will be considered for a full-time role on the Sims Metal Operations team.
Responsibilities
- Supervise production team members (laborers and equipment operators) performing production operations.
- Possess thorough working knowledge of the union contract (if applicable), employee handbook, safety manual, and all rules, programs, and procedures pertaining to production team members; apply them effectively and consistently.
- Familiarize team members with company policies, rules, and regulations.
- Promote and maintain good employee relations through effective management practices, setting expectations, coaching, and proper application of employee relations policies.
- Responsible for orientation and on-the-job training of team members in the safe, efficient operation of equipment.
- Instill a sense of good housekeeping in all employees regarding their immediate work area and their responsibility for compliance with all quality specifications.
- Evaluate probationary team members based on attendance, performance, attitude, and potential; recommend candidates for hire, promotion, transfer, demotion, or termination.
- Maintain production within the assigned department at authorized levels.
- Re-assign team members on 'down equipment' to reduce unfavorable labor variances.
- Observe production operations to ensure compliance with methods, quality standards, safety regulations, and efficient operation of equipment; take corrective action to eliminate deviations.
- Participate in conducting job hazard analyses and developing safe work procedures.
- Continuously analyze the assigned area for improved methods of production, tool design, communication, reporting, and cost controls; make recommendations to the production manager.
- Communicate on-the-job problems (e.g., low production, poor quality, attendance issues) to employees and work with them to develop corrective action plans; document problems and review action plans with the plant manager.
- Process required forms in a timely manner for payroll and Human Resources (e.g., Employee Change Forms, Paid Time Off Requests).
- Arrange for proper maintenance of machines and equipment; recommend improvements in equipment and processes.
- Study operations where cost standards are not being met to determine causes and implement corrective action.
- Coordinate functions with other departments or shifts where appropriate.
- Develop a consciousness of teamwork among assigned team members to attain departmental and Sims Metal Management (SMM) goals and objectives.
- Support and carry out the management philosophy and vision.
- Conduct meetings (e.g., safety and quality) and communicate policies and regulations to subordinate personnel.
- In case of an emergency, direct team members to their assigned safe area.
- Promote plant-wide teamwork and positive morale.
