About the role
R. J. Corman is seeking a talented Operations Manager to join and lead our team in Raleigh, NC. The Operations Manager will supervise and perform the daily operations of a shortline railroad operation to meet customer delivery schedules. They will also oversee efficient operation through planning and control of train movement, train crew scheduling, supervising pickup of incoming railcars from main lines, timely delivery of freight to customer locations, and pick-up and return of empties.
Responsibilities
- Supervises and performs daily transportation operations.
- Determines the operating schedule necessary to make customer deliveries within specified time frames.
- Selects, places, and arranges for job training for all divisional train handling personnel.
- Schedules locomotive usage and personnel assignments to ensure operation of trains to meet pickup and delivery schedules.
- Maintains proper track clearance and ensures communication systems are in place and functioning.
- Troubleshoots issues impacting efficient operation and inspects track and traffic problem areas.
- Ensures compliance with company policies, procedures, and practices in areas such as accounting, inventory, purchasing, equipment usage and maintenance, expense and time reporting, human resources, safety, and DOT regulations.
- Develops and implements safe operating procedures for employees, vehicles, and equipment under his/her supervision.
- Investigates and reports employee injuries and train accidents, and develops corrective and preventative actions.
- Troubleshoots customer complaints related to train operation and freight delivery.
Requirements
- Three to five years experience with train handling in a crewmember capacity, and two to three years specifically as a supervisor or manager of train operations.
- Prefer specific experience with operations planning and maintenance of good employee relations.
- Demonstrated ability to develop teamwork and work with all levels of personnel in achieving train-handling objectives.
Qualifications
- Requires pulling, controlling, and maneuvering onto and off equipment.
- Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80lbs.
- Able to walk, climb, and maintain balance on ladders and uneven terrain in a safe manner.
Skills
- Experience with train handling and operations planning.
