Operations Manager Job
Primary location: Marietta, Pennsylvania. Relocation offered: No. Full-time employment status with no travel required.
About the role
As an Operations Manager at Armstrong World Industries, you will have 24/7 accountability for production line manufacturing performance through leadership of Production Supervisors and Value Stream Specialists. You will develop and maintain systems for continuous improvement across all processes, ensuring effective performance in safety, quality assurance, production, maintenance, engineering, and environmental compliance. This role drives the plant safety process and aligns the value stream’s efforts with plant goals and objectives, including cost performance.
Responsibilities
- Promote the Plant Safety Process by leading safety initiatives and maintaining high-level awareness and operating discipline for all plant safety policies.
- Guide and advise supervisors on the interpretation of Plant and Company policies and the Union contract, and help resolve non-routine personnel problems.
- Provide guidance throughout the grievance process and deliver the company response at the third step of the grievance process.
- Drive quality performance of Value Stream operations using systems management and Lean principles, including layered auditing.
- Foster customer awareness throughout the value stream, focusing on delivering materials that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
- Routinely visit production operations to interact with employees, facilitate root cause analysis for safety, quality, and productivity issues, monitor performance and schedule adherence, and gather input for decision-making.
- Coach Supervisors and Team Managers in operational excellence and problem-solving.
- Assist in determining manpower requirements to meet production schedules.
- Promote good employee relations by frequently interacting with employees and addressing problems or complaints.
- Encourage supervisors to establish and maintain positive employee relationships.
- Promote achievement of plant goals and collaborate with the Value Stream Improvement Champion to drive focus, ownership, and engagement from the Value Stream Steering Team, maintenance, and production employees.
- Participate in, sponsor, and support the Lean process.
- Promote effective training of employees and work closely with the Value Stream Specialist to drive continuous improvement in training and certification processes.
- Drive continuous skill and process knowledge improvement and effective crew skill management by Supervisors/Team Managers.
- Promote excellence in housekeeping and implement processes, systems, and Lean tools to reduce effort and cost.
- Facilitate the ongoing integration of maintenance and production activities.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 3+ years of demonstrated supervisory and/or operations experience in an industrial production environment.
- Computer proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, with basic skills in SAP and Minitab.
- Basic understanding of maintenance systems, including PM, PdM technologies, and work planning.
Qualifications
- Ability to lead a large organization across a complex production operation.
- Demonstrated presentation, facilitation, and meeting management skills.
- Basic project management skills.
- Process improvement skills, ideally with proven Lean and Six Sigma expertise.
- Ability to use data from multiple sources to solve complex operational problems.
- Effective writing and data organization skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- 4-year Technical or Business Degree.
- 3+ years of operations management experience.
