Operations Manager I Environmental Services

About the Role

Provides leadership, direction, and management oversight for continuous improvement of the standard Environmental Services operating model within the facility. Demonstrates leadership in providing an optimal environment for patient care, safety, service, and value. Manages the department's day-to-day operations, ensuring a consistently high level of cleanliness and aesthetics for patients, visitors, and staff.

Lead the team that helps create a safe, healing environment for every patient at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital. In this critical leadership role, you will inspire and develop teams, drive operational excellence, and ensure the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and patient satisfaction across the facility. Your leadership will directly support Geisinger's mission by fostering an exceptional environment where patients, visitors, and staff can thrive.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and make recommendations for environmental hygiene maintenance for new floor coverings, wall coverings, furnishings, and interior finishes before purchase.
• Manage departmental budgets (e.g., capital, projects, supplies, operations).
• Ensure regulated medical waste is handled, packaged, stored, and disposed of in accordance with federal and state regulations, maintaining appropriate documentation.
• Manage necessary and required resources for the environmental services department, including recommendations for staffing levels, products, and equipment.
• Complete all Human Resources responsibilities, including interviewing, hiring, managing staff development, corrective actions, and staff engagement needs.
• Oversee all quality improvement initiatives related to training, auditing, inspecting, rounding, and making recommendations as needed.
• Collaborate with the EVS director to establish dashboard metrics to track operations and improvement initiatives.
• Promote a culture of safety, hand hygiene, patient experience, employee engagement, and retention.
• Coordinate scheduling and oversee subcontractors and vendors.
• Supervise and/or perform on-call emergency services when needed.
• Compose general and technical reports.
• Establish yourself as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) within environmental services, regulatory compliance, and training.
• Effectively employ computer programs and mobile devices, including proper log-ins, hardware/software use, file attachments, email composition, and internet browsing.
• Take a customer-centered approach when addressing the needs of and interacting with patients, visitors, guests, team members, and other healthcare workers.

Work is typically performed in an office environment. Accountable for satisfying all job-specific obligations and complying with all organization policies and procedures.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) - Required.
• Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience - Required.
• Relevant experience may be a combination of related work experience and degree obtained (Associate’s Degree = 2 years; Bachelor’s Degree = 4 years).
• Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Technician (CHEST) within 18 months - Association for the Healthcare Environment.

Schedule

This position is typically scheduled from 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM and plays a key role in supporting evening operations. Because healthcare never stops, schedules may be adjusted based on departmental and operational needs. The ideal candidate will demonstrate flexibility and a commitment to supporting a 24/7 patient care environment.
