About the role
The Operations Manager oversees the day-to-day operations at Bahde Wildlife Center, including wildlife rehabilitation specialists, admissions, satellite care, volunteers, and education programs. This role supports the SDHS mission to inspire compassion and advance the welfare of animals and people.
Responsibilities
- Directly supervises the Wildlife Rehabilitation Supervisor and the Satellite & Admissions Supervisor, and manages wildlife rehabilitation staff, admissions staff, and rehabilitation/admissions volunteers.
- Supports the Wildlife Rehabilitation Supervisor and Satellite & Admissions Supervisor by providing staff with guidance, coaching, mentoring, monitoring of performance, training and instruction, orientation, conducting performance evaluations, and issuing corrective actions, up to and including termination as needed.
- PARTNERS WITH SUPERVISORS TO CREATE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR STAFF, PROCESS DEVELOPMENT, AND SETTING TEAM GOALS.
- PROVIDES ORIENTATION, TRAINING, AND FEEDBACK FOR ASSIGNED VOLUNTEERS AND EXTERNs IN COLLABORATION WITH THE SUPERVISORS.
- IN COLLABORATION WITH THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, PREPARES THE ANNUAL BUDGET THAT IS PART OF THEIR FUNCTIONAL AREA AND MAINTAINS EXPENSES WITHIN BUDGETARY GUIDELINES.
- RESPONSIBLE FOR OVERSIGHT AND MANAGEMENT OF THE BAHDE OPERATIONS BUDGET.
- RESPONSIBLE FOR OVERSIGHT AND MANAGEMENT OF ANIMAL CARE SUPPLY AND INVENTORY.
- AID IN THE INTERNAL PROCESS OF EVALUATION OF ANIMALS FOR EUTHANASIA.
- AID IN AND PERFORM EUTHANASIA OF ANIMALS ACCORDING TO AVMA GUIDELINES.
- MANTAINS SDHS CERTIFICATION AS A CERTIFIED EUTHANASIA TECHNICIAN.
- MANAGES ALL WILDLIFE MOVEMENTS INCLUDING RELEASES AND INTRODUCTIONS, AND CONSULTS WITH THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR ALL ANIMAL TRANSFERS.
Requirements
- Requires a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Conservation, Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Zoology or other related field and four (4) years of full-time related experience working with animals in a wildlife rehabilitation, wildlife sanctuary, zoo, shelter, or veterinary hospital, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- One (1) year of supervisor experience required, two (2) years preferred.
- Experience using the Wildlife Medical Data Base (WRMD) is preferred.
- MUST BE WILLING TO GET RABIES PRE-EXPOSURE SERIES OR PRODUCE A COPY OF CURRENT RABIES PRE-EXPOSURE SERIES VACCINE OR TITERS RECORD. MUST HAVE A VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE AND BE APPROVED BY SDHS INSURANCE CARRIER TO DRIVE A COMPANY OR PERSONAL VEHICLE FOR WORK PURPOSES AND BE COMFORTABLE USING A PERSONAL VEHICLE TO TRANSPORT ANIMALS.
Qualifications
- Must be willing to have rabies titer levels checked every two years and receive boosters as needed.

- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
- Knowledge of wildlife rehabilitation practices and procedures.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
