Operations Manager (20 hours/week)
This position is fully remote. You’ll need to be available daily between 7am and 9am EST for a 4-hour shift, with some flexibility around this core team-overlap window. Reliable high-speed internet and a dedicated computer are required.
About the role
We’re looking for someone who can help make internal systems hum, working closely with the staff team. The role blends operations, project management, and tool administration. Success means executing recurring weekly, monthly, and yearly tasks, collaborating effectively, and continuously improving processes.
This job is for you if you have excellent attention to detail and deadline management, strong proofing and copyediting skills, and thrive while juggling multiple projects. You’re excited about building people-power movements for justice, love helping things run smoothly, and are eager to learn new tools quickly. You’re motivated to ensure the team’s work supports training participants and groups effectively.
Social Movement Technologies (SMT) is a nonprofit movement support group dedicated to providing organizing strategy, training, and campaign support to build people-power for justice in the digital age. We’re lean, mission-driven, and work with racial and climate justice groups to ramp up their online organizing. In our first 13 years, SMT has trained staff from over 6,800 groups and unions and worked with more than 240 groups on in-depth campaigns.
Responsibilities
- Manage SMT’s emailing calendar, load emails in Action Network, and ensure error-free sends.
- Work with a translation team to translate email content.
- Run payroll, payments, billing, and invoicing for the team.
- Respond to internal and external inquiries, including quick-response requests from trainees.
- Post provided social media content.
- Manage team tasks in ClickUp and help the team stay on track.
- Collect periodic metrics to gauge results in our work.
Requirements
- Excellent team communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and juggle multiple projects while communicating reliably about them.
- Proficiency with WordPress, Google Suite, social media posting, and project management tools (ClickUp or Asana).
- Experience loading emails and segmenting sends in a CRM (Action Network preferred; MailChimp is not a CRM).
- High attention to detail and strong proofing/copyediting skills.
- Commitment to and experience with movement work, particularly with or in Black/brown-led groups.
- Friendly, encouraging demeanor, conveyed effectively via email, videoconferencing, and phone.
- Motivation to learn and stay abreast of new tech developments.
- Ability to schedule yourself reliably and meet deadlines.
- Interest in a long-term role (not a short-term position).
- Project management experience, including breaking down deadlines and managing a team.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
Schedule
20 hours per week. Core availability required between 7am and 9am EST for a 4-hour daily shift, with some flexibility.
Pay
U.S.-based salary range: $32,000 – $36,000 annually, prorated for 20 hours/week. Pay varies based on experience and cost of living. A country rate sheet is available for non-U.S. applicants.
Benefits
- Monthly contribution toward health care.
- Employer match for 401K plan contributions.
- 3+ weeks of vacation plus federal holidays.
- Support for remote work, training, and mentoring.
- Highly collaborative and supportive work environment.
