Operations & Maintenance Technician III - Equipment Operator

About the role

The Equipment Operator performs the general and advanced practices and techniques of operating equipment with constant attention to safety of equipment operation in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of water utility assets, assemblies, and water related equipment such as large gates, valves, pipelines, structures vaults, drain covers, and similar equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general and advanced equipment operation.
  • Performs Preventive Maintenance (PMs), Corrective Maintenance (CMs), and improvements.
  • Rebuild and repair water conveyance systems, treatment and hydroelectric plants.
  • Performs roadway maintenance.
  • Prepares specific projects by mixing, laying, placing asphalt and concrete.
  • Maintains and repairs Right-of-Ways to ensure access to pipelines, aqueducts, powerlines and communication sites.
  • Performs and/or assists with major improvements and site shutdowns.
  • Recognizes and avoids harming endangered species, protected vegetation, and weed abatement in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations.
  • Assists with injection of sodium hypo chloride, sodium bisulfate and copper sulfate into aqueducts and reservoirs to control algae.
  • Performs general preventive and corrective maintenance on light and heavy equipment in both shop and field environments to maintain equipment in proper and safe working order.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as semi-tractor trailers, cranes, graders, loaders, low bed and dropeck trailers, dump trucks of varied capacities (10 yards or higher) in accordance with traffic laws and regulations upon public and private Right-of-Ways.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED in addition to a minimum of (3) years’ experience as an Equipment Operator; OR High school diploma or GED and attainment of skills through a recognized equipment operator trade training program and/or applicable related experience within an industrial environment.
  • Experience and knowledge as demonstrated by practical application of techniques and practices specific to heavy equipment operations.
  • Necessary skills include effective, legal and safe operation of a variety of motorized equipment including light and heavy construction equipment.
  • Also requires skills in preventive and corrective maintenance practices related to general construction that are normally associated with equipment operation and are generally obtained through applicable training and experience.

Qualifications

  • Valid Driver's license from a state of residency equivalent to a California Class A (Manual Transmission) with a tanker endorsement and medical certification is required at the time of application.
  • This position will require the successful candidate to obtain and maintain.

Skills

Effective, legal and safe operation of a variety of motorized equipment including light and heavy construction equipment. Skills in preventive and corrective maintenance practices related to general construction.

Employment Standards
