Operations & Maintenance - Damage Prevention (O&M D)

This field-focused role supports BP US Terminals & Pipelines (T&P) through Right-of-Way (ROW) management, Damage Prevention activities, and permitting-related operational support. Based at Manhattan Station (Gate 1) in Illinois, the position helps protect pipeline assets from third-party damage while ensuring compliance with ROW and permitting requirements. The role covers an assigned territory of approximately a 250-mile radius around Manhattan Station, with occasional travel beyond the area as needed.

Responsibilities

• Follow all health, safety, security, environmental (HSSE), operational, and maintenance practices and procedures.

• Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, including eye/face protection, flame-retardant clothing (FRC), foot protection, gloves, hearing protection, and head protection.
• Work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary, including emergency 811 call-outs and response to emergency situations.
• Complete all training and qualification requirements within the stated timeframe of the BP Pipelines OMD Training Program.
• Perform pipeline identification, location, and marking using electronic locators and probes.
• Provide Asset Operational (AO) Permitting on ROW work and routinely monitor work locations.
• Inspect pipelines for leaks, replace damaged markers, and check for other irregularities (by vehicle and foot).
• Inspect abnormal right-of-way conditions and perform occasional hand digging, manual probing, and walking rough terrain.
• Monitor and observe excavation activities over/near the pipeline.
• Act as a liaison for BP with utilities, municipalities, property owners, excavators, and other third parties.
• Recognize third-party scope of work and protect the pipeline accordingly.
• Attend Public Awareness & Education meetings and monitor/locate notifications for conflicts.
• Receive and physically check items on aerial reports.
• Deliver mapping data collection and processing using drones and sub-meter GPS.
• Run inspections for right-of-way clearing (including ATW, safety, landowner contact, and progress) and update Digital Mapping Applications.
• Collect and update attributes and feature types using digital Mapping GIS programs.
• Document and support removal of pipeline encroachments.
• Support internal line inspection (ILI) tool runs, as assigned.
• Maintain equipment in good working condition.
• Conduct right-of-way maintenance activities (e.g., install gates, replace strain gauges, clear access roads, remove windfalls, maintain culverts/half-rounds).
• Prepare “as-built” drawings of foreign line crossings and other outside construction activities.
• Complete Inspection & Repair reports, Foreign Line Crossing reports, or others as required.
• Obtain a license to fly drones.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent.
• ROW and/or Line Locating Experience.
• Legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
• Valid Driver’s License; driving safety is mandatory and a condition of employment.
• Must reside within 50 miles of Manhattan Station, Illinois.
• Willingness to travel extensively (75% or greater travel required).
• Commitment to learning new skills and completing the O&M D training curriculum within the outlined timeframe.
• Ability to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card) if required by local operations.

Additional Competencies & Experience

• Ability to read maps, alignment sheets, construction drawings, and complete alignment sheets.
• Underground construction experience and knowledge (preferred but not required).
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair equipment as assigned.
• Conduct and document DOT equipment inspections.
• Proficiency in MAXIMO, Utilisphere, CBT, MS Office, and other applications.
• Meet all DOT requirements, including Operator Qualifications.
• Participate in emergency response training (e.g., Hazwoper, RCRA, respiratory).
• Computer skills, including MS Office Suites.

Pay

New hires start at an hourly rate of $35.34 (entry-level for the O&M classification). The rate incrementally increases to $47.60 upon optimal completion of the O&M Skills Training curriculum (approximately 24 months from the employment start date).
