Operations Director
About the Role
Within the assigned area (Los Angeles/Ventura), you will assist Business Unit Leaders and project leadership to develop, grow, and maintain business units from the project lead stage through preconstruction, construction, and closeout. This role ensures operational excellence in executing all required policies and procedures, maintains a relentless focus on meeting and exceeding customer needs, and builds business with current and potential customers by promoting construction services.
Responsibilities
- Project Financial Responsibilities
- Understand the process of creating and managing project budgets and coordinate Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) development.
- Ensure complete knowledge of owner’s contract requirements, including bonds, fees, insurances, notifications, schedules, reporting, and costs.
- Assist the Project Manager in developing the monthly Projected Final Cost Report (PFR) projections on time.
- Preconstruction Services
- Collaborate with the project’s operations team and Preconstruction to prepare, review, and monitor cost-related information and reports for budget development.
- Develop and report on Minority Business Entity (MBE) requirements for the project, as needed.
- Establish sustainability objectives for the project in collaboration with the project team.
- Project Start-up and Scheduling
- Collaborate with the project manager, scheduling, superintendent, subcontractors, and suppliers to create a construction schedule.
- Assist in developing an organizational and responsibilities matrix at project start, determining resources needed (e.g., people, tools, equipment, materials).
- Participate in reviewing the owner contract with all project participants to ensure timely and budget-compliant completion.
- Coordinate with the operations team to deliver subcontractor and supplier requirements to meet project schedules.
- Project Administration, Operations, and Close-out
- Properly staff projects in the assigned area, including talent acquisition and retention.
- Assist project teams with employee relations as necessary.
- Support project administration and daily operations.
- Ensure the project team prepares and maintains the project schedule, milestone dates, and close-out checklist.
- Assist with project staffing, assigning responsibilities, execution, and follow-up plans.
- Establish relationships and communication tools with suppliers and key stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of materials, supplies, tools, equipment, and personnel.
- Ensure all team members understand performance standards and expectations.
- Maintain project site and company asset security, implementing programs for safety, loss prevention, EEO, risk management, training, and quality control.
- Support achievement of sustainability objectives for the project.
- Routinely visit all assigned project sites to assess progress, quality of work, and compliance with policies and procedures.
- Meet with project employees at all levels to discuss career development, accomplishments, concerns, and ideas.
- Promote Customer Relations
- Build effective relationships with customers, design teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and user groups that reflect and support company core values.
- Actively participate in industry, client, and community relations to enhance company image.
- Make presentations to proactively seek new business opportunities through relationships.
- Culture, Leadership, and Employee Development

- Serve as a role model and promote professional behavior.
- Participate in and support operations training programs, including facilitation and development as requested.
- Commit to the development of project staff and self.
- Prepare performance and salary reviews for employees, including annual development plans and follow-up.
- Develop and mentor operations employees at all levels.
- Assist project leadership (VP/PX/PM) as needed.
- Working Conditions
- The majority of work is completed on job sites in an office trailer or existing structure.
- Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn when outside the office trailer or structure, as required by company safety policies and weather conditions.
- May need to relocate to other geographic project locations if necessary.
Qualifications
- 15+ years of construction industry experience (years may vary based on project size, scope, and complexity).
- Demonstrated ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously.
- B.S. in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (preferred).
- Leadership skills with the ability and willingness to face challenges, solve problems, and motivate others while maintaining effective customer relationships.
- Ability to supervise and develop direct reports while delegating significant responsibilities.
- Effectively manage essential functions by consistently driving for quality, profitable, safe, and timely results.
- Strong presentation and verbal/written communication skills.
- Proficiency using a personal computer (PC) and company communication tools and software, such as email, Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Office, Outlook), Smartsheet, Primavera P6, Procore, digital documents, and BIM models.
Pay
The base compensation range for the role of Operations Director in Los Angeles/Ventura, CA is $225,000 to $245,000 annually. The final pay position within the range will be based on factors including relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business needs.
