Operating Room Assistant

About the Role

Come join the Surgical Services team at Mercy Medical Center, part of Trinity Health Of New England. This position performs duties related to patient assistance, patient transportation, and cleaning of operating rooms and the general surgical area. Provides direct patient care to all ages of patients and assists throughout the department to ensure positive patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Cleans and sanitizes all operating rooms, ancillary rooms, and offices within specified areas.
• Assists OR personnel with obtaining, assembling, and ensuring the safety of positioning equipment used on the operating table.
• Transports patients in a safe, courteous, and respectful manner when necessary.
• Assists OR personnel with positioning patients on the operating table as needed.
• Assists with the set-up of operating room procedures, turnover, and terminal cleaning of rooms at the end of the day.
• Performs major cleaning within the department, including walls, windows, high areas, corridors, and floors as instructed.
• Assists with the maintenance and adequate inventory of surgical and anesthesia supplies.
• Ensures patient safety through proper identification processes, appropriate directions, and assistance when necessary.
• Models techniques and maintains knowledge of hospital policies, such as patient identification.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum one (1) year of experience in a healthcare facility as an orderly or transport aide, preferably in a surgical or similar environment.
• Certified in CPR (required or must be obtained within six (6) weeks of hire).

Working Conditions

• Requires working with equipment weighing up to 40 pounds or performing procedures where carelessness could result in minor cuts, bruises, or muscle pulls.
• Regular and routine exposure to occupational hazards or contagious diseases, requiring the use of Universal Precautions.
• Requires the ability to reach and grasp objects and the ability to hear.
• Requires considerable physical effort on a consistent basis, such as lifting, pulling, or pushing unyielding loads (heavy, bulky, awkward, more than 40 pounds).
• Exposure to blood and various body fluids, requiring caution and the use of established safety guidelines and equipment using Universal Precautions.

Pay

Pay Range: $18.05 - $25.60 per hour. Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates.
