What this job involves
The Operating Engineer - Critical Environments is responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of facility equipment across all systems at a critical data center facility. This role requires technical expertise in one craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, or Central Utility Plant Operations) while maintaining multi-skilled capabilities in other areas to ensure 100% uptime of mission-critical systems.
Work Schedule
- Wednesday: 1p-9p | 8 hours
- Thursday: 11a-9p | 8 hours
- Friday:11a-9p | 10 hours
- Saturday:7a-7p | 12 hours
Your day-to-day tasks will include:
- Operating, maintaining, and performing preventive maintenance on all data center systems including fire/life safety, HVAC, chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, plumbing, and control systems to maintain 100% uptime
- Maintaining electrical systems and emergency backup equipment including lighting, UPS, ATS, STS, PDU, generators, primary switchgear, power distribution, and transformers
- Operating and adjusting refrigeration, chilled water, air conditioning equipment, boilers, ventilating systems, water heaters, pumps, valves, piping, and filters
- Recording equipment readings and making necessary adjustments to ensure proper operation of all mechanical and electrical equipment
- Monitoring building management systems and responding promptly to alarms and alerts to prevent system failures
- Managing work orders through CMMS, coordinating with vendors, and addressing customer-facing tickets
- Analyzing system operations to determine causes of problems or malfunctions and taking corrective action as required
- Maintaining a clean and safe workplace while complying with departmental policies for safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials
- Understanding emergency escalation procedures and managing incidents that put critical systems at risk
Requirements
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent
- 4+ years of related work experience with systems, emergency generators, and switchgear
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, and codes
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively before small groups
- Working knowledge of or capability to develop proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access
- Ability to professionally interact with tenants and contractors
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs, climb ladders up to 30 ft and work from heights
- Ability to work different schedules, holidays, on-call/rotation, and respond to site emergencies
Desired Experience and Technical Skills
Preferred: CMMS work order system experience
Hands-on experience working in a data center or critical facility environment
