About the Department

The Operations and Analytics department in the Carlos Alvarez College of Business comprises 16 full-time faculty members, including 11 tenured/tenure-track faculty specializing in business analytics, operations research, operations management, supply chain management, service operations, and healthcare operations. The department emphasizes high-impact research and offers a supportive environment for publishing in top academic journals.

The department provides undergraduate degrees in Business Analytics, Operations, Supply Chain Management, and Actuarial Science, as well as a master’s degree in Business Analytics and an upcoming Ph.D. in Business Analytics. Tenured faculty typically have a 2/2 teaching load, while untenured, tenure-track faculty teach three courses per year. The Carlos Alvarez College of Business is AACSB accredited and enrolls over 5,000 students across bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. programs.

About the Role

This position aims to strengthen the department’s capabilities in analytics, operations, and applied decision sciences while supporting key academic programs, including the M.S. and B.B.A. in Business Analytics, the B.B.A. in Operations and Supply Chain Management, and the upcoming Ph.D. in Business Analytics. The role aligns with strategic priorities in business analytics, operations management, artificial intelligence, healthcare operations, and data-driven decision-making.

The department seeks a faculty member whose research integrates analytical methods with operational decision-making, focusing on areas such as optimization, simulation, machine learning, forecasting, decision-making under uncertainty, supply chain management, and service operations. Preference will be given to candidates with research interests in healthcare operations and analytics, leveraging opportunities from the recent integration of UT San Antonio and UT Health San Antonio.

The successful candidate will develop interdisciplinary collaborations with clinicians, health-system leaders, and researchers across the combined institution, including in healthcare delivery, workforce and resource management, public health, and clinical decision-making. The role supports program growth by recruiting and mentoring students, developing courses that connect analytics with operations and managerial decision-making, and contributing to curricular innovation across undergraduate and graduate programs.

The faculty member will pursue collaborative research opportunities, build partnerships with healthcare organizations, industry, government agencies, and community stakeholders, and contribute to multidisciplinary grant proposals, aligning with the university’s emphasis on externally funded research.

Qualifications

• Earned Ph.D., or Ph.D. expected by the position’s start date, in Business Analytics, Operations Management, Operations Research, Management Science, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited university.
• Strong potential to conduct high-quality, impactful research at the intersection of operations, analytics, and data-driven decision-making.
• Expertise in one or more of the following areas: optimization, simulation, stochastic modeling, decision-making under uncertainty, machine learning, artificial intelligence, data mining, forecasting, data visualization, healthcare operations, supply chain management, or service operations.
• Strong potential to obtain external funding for research projects, including interdisciplinary and applied research initiatives.
• Demonstrated ability or strong potential to teach effectively at the undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral level in areas such as business analytics, operations management, machine learning, or related subjects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability and commitment to work collegially with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• A research program applying operations research, analytics, machine learning, or other quantitative methods to healthcare, public health, or related service and societal systems.
• Strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers in other departments within the Alvarez College of Business (e.g., Management, Economics, Finance), as well as other academic units across UT San Antonio, including Engineering, Sciences, Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, and related healthcare, public-sector, industry, and community organizations.
• Research interests aligning with strategic priorities, including:
  • Business analytics and/or artificial intelligence
  • Operations and/or data-driven decision-making
  • Healthcare and/or public health
  • Engineering and technology
• Evidence of, or strong potential for, developing externally funded interdisciplinary research and translating analytical methods into solutions for complex operational and societal problems.

For candidates at the level of Associate or Full Professor, tenure is contingent upon Board of Regents' approval.
