About the role
The Outpatient Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor is responsible for managing and administering the SCI or TBI program within the Therapeutic Recreation department, including professional supervision and direction to clinical staff. This position promotes clinical innovation and high standards of performance in patient care, ethics, and professional behavior. The T-Rec Supervisor provides ongoing education and mentoring for current staff.
Requirements
- Current BLS for the Health Care Provider certification from the American Heart Association
- Certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CRTS) or eligible, preferred upon hire
- Current, valid Colorado driver’s license in good standing and insurable
- Bachelor’s degree in recreation with therapeutic emphasis required; Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Recreation preferred
- 1–3 years of clinical and/or community experience working with traumatic spinal cord and brain injury patients required
- Leadership experience preferred
Responsibilities
- Provide direction and supervision of departmental personnel, demonstrating professional judgment, problem-solving, and appropriate delegation
- Collaborate with the department team to assess and allocate staff resources on a daily basis based on departmental needs
- Provide leadership in developing performance standards for all departmental personnel and evaluate and counsel employees on performance
- Plan and develop ongoing educational programs for the department
- Assist with implementation and coordination of departmental procedures based on policies and review reports, records, and directives
- Create schedules, adjust staffing levels, and analyze employee workload
- Provide staff education and precept new hires, interns, and students
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives for regulatory compliance (Joint Commission, OSHA, etc.)
- Ensure effective coordination of Therapeutic Recreation programs through interdepartmental collaboration and direct supervision
- Promote an environment supporting quality patient care
- Collaborate with nursing and therapy directors to assess staff resources and assist in hospital program direction and long-range planning
- Develop and sustain therapeutic recreation programs tailored to patient and family needs, including social activities, events, spiritual activities, creative activities, and Adventure Program outings
- Provide direction for new program development, treatment techniques, and equipment
- Perform essential job duties of staff Therapeutic Recreation therapists, including direct patient care and treatment plan adaptation
