Online Adjunct Instructor - Introduction to Law and the Legal System

Students will examine the American legal system and related terminology from a paralegal’s perspective. They will explore the sources of law and structure and authority of government, including the court system and court procedures. In addition, students will examine the difference between civil and criminal cases. Students will explore different areas of law where paralegals may work, study the skills and knowledge required for success—including legal writing, legal research, interviewing, and case management duties—and examine the ethical and professional responsibilities associated with paralegal duties.

Responsibilities

• Communicate both verbally and in writing with students regarding feedback on student performance consistently throughout the course.
• Be available for students via phone, email, and individual appointments for questions and academic assistance.
• Respond to Dean/University staff regarding performance, student issues/concerns, or items needed for faculty file/accreditation needs in a timely manner.
• Exhibit appropriate behavior, language, professional communication, demeanor, and dress at all times.
• Teach up to 3 work units per academic quarter with a focus on:
  • Dynamic, active classroom engagement using effective teaching strategies and multiple techniques.
  • Creating a student-centered learning environment with high levels of engagement through activities and live classroom tools.
  • Ensuring clarity, relevance, and connection of class session objectives to course performance objectives.
  • Organizing the classroom efficiently and effectively using class time.
• Demonstrate subject matter expertise and mastery in the field, playing an integral role in curriculum development and assessment.
• Support student success through outreach, availability, and collaboration with Deans.
• Attend faculty meetings, events, programmatic meetings, and committee work as designated by the Dean.
• Complete a minimum of six (6) Rasmussen Educational Units (REUs) annually or two (2) REUs per quarter for professional development in teaching and discipline-specific areas.

Requirements

• Teaching experience preferred (minimum of 3 years’ experience in the field of study).
• Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
• Strong interpersonal skills to interact with students, leadership, and peers.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Regular access to a computer with the following system requirements:
  • Windows XP or greater.
  • Microsoft Office 2010.
  • Reliable internet connection.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Legal Studies or JD.
• Paralegal Studies experience preferred.
• 2-3 years of legal experience preferred.
• Must provide professional licenses/certifications required for specialized schools (e.g., Health Sciences, Nursing) before teaching; license must be active and unencumbered.
• Must provide official transcripts for each degree earned from an accredited institution before teaching.

This position is remote but not available to residents of Colorado.

Pay

Compensation for Online Part-Time (Adjunct) Instructors is determined based on the workload (Work Unit) associated with the specific course assignment. The current pay estimate is $1,700.00 per full-term Work Unit. Individual starting pay is determined by factors including job level, location, skill set, experience, training, and other business and organizational needs.
