Online Adjunct Instructor - Civil Litigation

This course is the study of civil litigation, focusing on the paralegal’s role through each stage of a civil case—from the first point of contact with a client to post-trial. Topics include initiating a lawsuit (pleadings), discovery, legal motions, and trial preparation. The course prepares students to construct pleadings, interview clients, and prepare discovery, trial, and post-trial documents.

Reporting Relationships

Adjunct Faculty will report to an Academic Dean.

Responsibilities

• Communicate verbally and in writing with students regarding feedback on performance consistently throughout the course, as required by Faculty Expectations.
• Be available for students via phone, email, and individual appointments for academic assistance as outlined in Faculty Expectations.
• Respond to Deans/University staff regarding performance, student issues, or accreditation needs in a timely manner.
• Maintain appropriate behavior, language, professional communication, demeanor, and dress at all times.

Key Accountabilities

• Teaching Effectiveness:
  • Use effective teaching strategies and multiple techniques to create a dynamic, active classroom.
  • Model appropriate learning skills and foster an environment conducive to learning.
  • Engage students through activities, community building, and synchronous learning sessions.
  • Ensure clarity, relevance, and connection of class objectives to course performance goals.
  • Maintain an organized classroom and efficient use of class time.
  • Demonstrate subject matter expertise and articulate concepts effectively to students.
  • Play an integral role in curriculum development and assessment for the area of expertise.
• Student and University Support:
  • Create a classroom presence in collaboration with the Dean to support student success.
  • Provide outreach and availability through synchronous or asynchronous communication to help students achieve learning objectives.
• Faculty Meetings and Responsibilities:
  • Attend events, programmatic meetings, and committee work as designated by the Dean.
• Professional Development:
  • Complete a minimum of six (6) Rasmussen Educational Units (REUs) annually or two (2) REUs per quarter (whichever is less) in Teaching Development and Development in the Discipline.

Requirements

• Teaching experience preferred (minimum of 3 years’ experience in the field of study).
• Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
• Strong interpersonal skills to interact with students, leadership, and peers.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Regular access to a computer with the following system requirements:
  • Windows XP or greater.
  • Microsoft Office 2010.
  • Reliable internet connection.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Legal Studies or JD.
• 2-3 years of experience in civil litigation preferred.
• Must provide professional licenses/certifications (if applicable) and official transcripts from an accredited institution before teaching.
• License must be active and unencumbered (required for specialized schools such as Health Sciences and Nursing).

Location

This position is remote but not available to residents of Colorado.

Pay

Compensation for Online Part-Time (Adjunct) Instructors is based on workload (Work Unit) per course assignment. The estimated pay is $1,700.00 per full-term Work Unit. Individual starting pay is determined by factors such as job level, location, skill set, experience, and training.
