About the role

The Oncology Nurse evaluates, plans, implements, and documents nursing care for the oncology patient. The RN provides a range of patient care, including inserting IV lines, responsible for drawing blood via peripheral site, port-a-caths, and PICC’s, administration of chemotherapy, administration of immunotherapy, therapeutic phlebotomy procedures, transfusion of blood products, administering oxygen when needed, monitoring vital signs and supportive care.

Responsibilities

  • Inserts IV lines
  • Draws blood via peripheral site, port-a-caths, and PICC’s
  • Administers chemotherapy and immunotherapy
  • Performs therapeutic phlebotomy procedures
  • Transfuses blood products
  • Administers oxygen
  • Maintains and monitors vital signs
  • Provides supportive care
  • Works within independent medication orders placed within EPIC as well as within oncology treatment and supportive plans

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Licensed and current registration as a professional nurse in the State of Illinois
  • Current CPR certification
  • Clinical experience preferred
  • Successful completion of a Basic Oncology Nursing and Cancer Chemotherapy Course within six months of hire
  • Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field
  • Experience with the nursing process and strong nursing practice skills including physical assessment skills
  • Ability to walk, lift, stoop, bend, and push

  • Good working knowledge of the nursing process

Skills

  • Proficiency with EPIC
  • Knowledge of oncology treatments and supportive care
