Minimum of 1 year of cancer registry experience required (enrollment in an NCRA-approved ODS certification program may be substituted). High School Diploma or GED required. Must hold the ODS-C (Oncology Data Specialist Certified) credential from NCRA **OR** meet one of the NCRA ODS exam eligibility routes and successfully complete the accredited education program within one year of hire. Must obtain ODS certification within three years of hire.

What You Will Do

  • Responsible for abstracting all reportable malignancies and reportable benign cases in accordance with Louisiana Tumor Registry (LTR), Commission on Cancer (CoC), and national cancer registry standards.
  • Support high-quality cancer care and research through the collection, analysis, and maintenance of accurate and timely cancer data while ensuring compliance with state and national reporting requirements.
  • Conduct concurrent and retrospective abstraction of cancer patient records from electronic medical records, pathology reports, radiology reports, and clinical documentation.
  • Analyze medical records to determine primary site, histology, stage, treatment, and other key cancer characteristics.
  • Accurately collect and enter demographic, diagnostic, treatment, and follow-up data into the cancer registry database.
  • Assign coding, staging, sequencing, and treatment information according to SEER, NAACCR, ICD-10, AJCC, and CoC/STORE guidelines.
  • Determine correct sequencing of diagnoses, procedures, and treatment modalities including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, and other interventions.
  • Apply critical thinking skills to accurately code primary site, histology, Extent of Disease (EOD), Summary Stage, SSDIs, and AJCC staging elements.
  • Maintain complete and accurate follow-up of analytical cancer cases in accordance with CoC and state requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal and external healthcare providers and facilities to obtain complete treatment information.
  • Maintain and utilize current cancer registry coding manuals, databases, and regulatory resources.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, audits, and special projects to ensure data integrity and regulatory compliance.
  • Stay current with cancer registry standards and oncology advancements through continuing education, conferences, and professional development activities.
  • Adhere to HIPAA regulations and organizational policies regarding confidentiality and protection of sensitive patient information.
  • Communicate effectively with leadership regarding process improvements, workflow changes, and registry operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
