About the role
The Traveling Field Technician serves as a field-based trainer, Certified Welding Educator, and quality resource supporting Gardner-Watson projects nationwide. This position works directly with field crews to improve welding skills, support employee certifications, identify training needs, troubleshoot installation issues, and promote quality workmanship across all projects. The Traveling Field Technician helps crews perform at a higher level by providing hands-on instruction, technical guidance, and proactive problem solving in the field.
Responsibilities
- Travel to jobsites nationwide to support field operations, training, and quality initiatives.
- Evaluate crew performance and identify employees who would benefit from additional welding instruction or certification support.
- Provide hands-on training in deck puddle welding, seam welding, stud welding, and related installation practices.
- Demonstrate proper welding techniques and coach employees in field conditions.
- Support employees in achieving and maintaining required welding certifications.
- Conduct field evaluations and inspections to verify compliance with company standards and project requirements.
- Identify workmanship issues and provide corrective guidance before deficiencies impact project performance.
- Assess project readiness, including material availability, installation conditions, and equipment readiness.
- Troubleshoot welding, stud installation, and equipment-related issues in the field.
- Partner with Foremen, Superintendents, and Operations leaders to improve crew capabilities and project outcomes through skill-based or process-based training.
- Document training activities, observations, and recommendations from site visits.
- Promote consistent quality standards, best practices, and continuous improvement across all projects.
Education and Experience
- Certified Welding Educator (CWI/CWE) certification required.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Five (5) or more years of experience in welding, steel decking, structural steel, stud welding, or a related construction trade.
- Experience training, mentoring, or developing craft professionals preferred.
- Experience evaluating welding quality and field installation practices preferred.
- Commercial construction experience strongly preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively throughout the United States required, crossing state lines without restrictions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of deck puddle welds, seam welds, stud welding, and associated welding processes.
- Ability to teach, coach, and develop field personnel through hands-on instruction.
- Ability to identify quality concerns and recommend corrective actions.
- Knowledge of construction drawings, specifications, and field installation requirements.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to assess project readiness and identify potential issues before they impact production.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to build credibility and positive working relationships with field employees and project leadership.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing extensive travel schedules.
