On Call Snow Plow Operator - Garrison or Isle - Transportation Generalist

Intermittent, emergency on-call position

About the role

MnDOT District 3 will fill 2 On-Call / Emergency Snow Plow Driver positions. On-call emergency employees are intermittent fill-in drivers who work snow and ice shifts and fill in for regular operators who are not available. During a snow and ice season, employees are typically split into an A or B shift: 12:00 AM – 12:00 PM (A shift) or 12:00 PM – 12:00 AM (B shift). An employee may be asked to work 8 hours or more depending on the length of the snow event. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one hour of being called.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control
  • Prepares and inspects winter equipment
  • Performs preseason snow route inspection and post-storm cleanup
  • Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals
  • Installs, repairs, maintains, and removes snow fences
  • Replaces mailboxes

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience)
  • OR successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) in lieu of experience (transcripts required)
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with a Tanker Endorsement
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records
  • Must pass past-employer reference checks and criminal history check
  • Must submit to a Federal Department of Transportation pre-employment drug test (with negative test results) and be subject to future random drug and alcohol testing
  • Must be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse
  • Must pass a preplacement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines (MDMA, MDA, and MDEA), and acetylmorphine (6-AM)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist

Pay

$25.19 – $31.60 per hour
