On Call Snow Plow Operator - Wadena, Motley and Long Prairie - Transportation Generalist

Emergency on-call positions available in Motley, Wadena, and Long Prairie. These intermittent fill-in drivers work during snow and ice events, covering shifts for regular operators who are unavailable.

About the role

On-call emergency employees are split into A or B shifts during snow and ice season: 12:00 AM – 12:00 PM (A shift) or 12:00 PM – 12:00 AM (B shift). Employees may be asked to work 8 hours or more depending on the length of the snow event. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one hour of being called.

Responsibilities

• Maintain roadways for snow and ice control
• Prepare and inspect winter equipment
• Perform preseason snow route inspection and post-storm cleanup
• Set up winter stockpiles and transfer anti-icing and de-icing chemicals
• Install, repair, maintain, and remove snow fences; replace mailboxes
• Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management
• Perform traffic control set-ups and/or notify dispatch of disabled vehicles

Requirements

• One year of experience in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (e.g., roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience)
• OR successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) to substitute for one year of experience (transcripts required)
• Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with a Tanker Endorsement
• Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records
• Must pass a Federal Department of Transportation pre-employment drug test (with negative results) and be subject to future random drug and alcohol testing
• Must be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse
• Must pass past-employer reference checks and criminal history check

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist

Pay

$25.19 - $31.60 per hour
