Fixed-term, hourly position at $38/hour.
Responsibilities
- Conduct a start-of-year meeting with cooperating teacher(s) and teacher candidate to review expectations, policies, procedures, SCU’s expectations for the cooperating teacher, the field supervisor’s role, and all discussion topics from the August/September orientation.
- Provide an overview of the program and SCU’s expectations, including teacher candidates’ time commitment, absence reporting, and adherence to SCU and school district calendars; respond to cooperating teachers’ questions regarding the teacher candidate handbook.
- Represent the SCU teaching credential program in communications with cooperating teachers, maintaining ongoing contact and clarifying program expectations as needed.
- Assist with and validate teacher candidate’s completion of tasks on the Clinical Practice Checklist.
- Support the teacher candidate by reviewing lesson plans, answering questions, and brainstorming solutions to field-based challenges.
- Observe, document, and evaluate teacher candidates’ professional practices—including lesson planning, unit design, differentiation, classroom management, and assessment of student learning—at least once per month using SCU evaluation documents.
- Provide detailed feedback to teacher candidates following both informal and formal observations.
- Document formal observations each quarter using SCU evaluation forms (numerical rating scale and narrative observations) and complete a summative assessment at the end of each quarter.
- Demonstrate for cooperating teachers how to use SCU’s observation and evaluation forms and discuss suggested timelines for completing them each quarter.
- Periodically check in with the cooperating teacher to review teacher candidates’ progress outside of scheduled end-of-quarter benchmark meetings.
- Hold a benchmark meeting at the conclusion of each quarter with the teacher candidate and cooperating teacher to review summative assessments and determine readiness to advance or continue in student teaching, completing the appropriate documentation.
- Communicate regularly with Coordinators of Field Placement and Director of Teacher Education regarding any evidence of poor performance or concerns about the suitability of the classroom placement or cooperating teacher.
- Assist in the preparation and completion of a Field Experience Performance Plan when necessary.
- Treat cooperating teachers and credential candidates with professional respect.
- Recommend initiatives and implement changes to improve quality and services.
- Identify and determine the cause of problems; develop and present recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.
- Maintain contact with customers and solicit feedback for improved services.
- Maximize productivity through appropriate tools, planned training, and performance initiatives.
- Research and develop resources that create timely and efficient workflow.
- Prepare progress reports; inform supervisor of project status and deviations from goals.
- Ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of all operational functions.
- Prepare and submit reports as requested and required.
- Develop and implement guidelines to support the functions of the unit.
Requirements
- Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.
- Current knowledge of the content and the current context of public schooling, including California-adopted P-12 content standards, frameworks, and accountability systems.
- Knowledge of diversity in society, including diverse abilities, culture, language, ethnicity, and gender orientation.
- Demonstration of effective professional practices in teaching and learning, scholarship, and service.
- Significant experience as a teacher or administrator in a K-12 school setting, including experience observing and evaluating teaching performance.
Physical Demands
- Considerable time spent at a desk using a computer terminal.
- May be required to travel to other buildings on campus, attend conferences and training sessions within the Bay Area or in- or out-of-state locations, and occasionally travel to outside customers, vendors, or suppliers.
Work Environment
- Typical office and computer lab environment, mostly indoors with windows.
- Offices with equipment noise and frequent interruptions.
- Telecommuting is permitted, with work required to be performed within California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, or Illinois.
