PATH is seeking candidates passionate about helping others make a positive change in their lives to join our Interim Housing team as the On-Call Cook at the RHC location.

Since its foundation in 1984, PATH (People Assisting The Homeless) has pioneered bold and effective approaches to assist people experiencing homelessness. PATH operates services throughout California, connecting our clients to a comprehensive continuum of homelessness prevention, street outreach, employment preparation and placement assistance, individualized case management, supportive services, interim housing, and permanent supportive housing.

About The Job

As part of the Interim Housing team, the On-Call Cook position is an integral component of PATH Interim Housing, The Cook helps create a welcoming, homelike environment and nutritious meals for our guests. They work alongside a team of kitchen and case management staff to ensure that all PATH Interim Housing guests receive three meals each day and snacks/refreshments throughout the day as needed.

  • Provide all guests with a home-like environment for the duration of their stay in PATH Interim Housing.
  • Promote and follow interim housing established values, guidelines, and rules.
  • Aid all volunteers by providing all necessary supports to ensure that they have a valuable experience.
  • Ensure that guests' meals are served at the established times and support other kitchen staff as required.
  • Cook large quantities of food with staggered cooking, heating, baking, etc.
  • Prepare food and beverages according to standardized recipes, production sheets, and menus.
  • Organize duties so that foods are prepared for service at appropriate times and within acceptable temperature ranges.

  • Set up and serve on tray line.
  • Set up a portable steam table and serve in the dining room.
  • Operate all electric, gas, and steam equipment properly.
  • Maintain equipment in proper sanitary and operating condition.
  • Adhere to work/time schedules.
  • Receive, verify, and put stock away.
  • Follow proper cleaning procedures as per schedules.
  • Maintain sanitary conditions during all food preparation and delivery by following correct infection control procedures and by thoroughly cleaning work areas and equipment in the department, including walls and floors.
  • Oversee meal preparation in the absence of the chef and Lead Cook.
  • Request, store, label, rotate, and dispose of all food and supply items, perishable and nonperishable.
  • Prepare and serve meals that are palatable and appetizing in appearance.
  • Answer phone and deliver any specific meal request to units.
  • Aid as needed with picking up and dropping off food donations and meals to multiple sites utilizing PATH company vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience in a paid culinary setting.
  • Minimum Qualifications: Current Food Handling Certificate or ability to obtain Food Handling Certificate.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Have employment eligibility verification.
  • Be able and willing to obtain CPR/First Aid training.
  • Successfully complete the following as a condition of hire: Tuberculosis Test, Background Screening, Drug Test.
  • Driving is an essential function of this position. To meet the employment requirements for this role, all candidates must: Have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and ownership for personal vehicles used during work duties, and the ability to qualify for PATH's insurance coverage.

We are a California employer. Therefore, all regular and customary work must be performed within the state. Approval for work outside of the office, does not establish approval for work to be conducted outside of California. PATH does not offer fully remote positions. While some roles may include a schedule that involves multiple designated worksites or approved off-site locations (e.g., hybrid schedules), this does not imply that work will be performed from home. Many positions are fully on-site with no off-site work.
