On- Call Chaplain

About the Role

The Chaplain integrates spiritual and emotional dimensions into care practices, applying ethical theories relevant to the professional context. As the spiritual care specialist within the care team, the Chaplain assesses spiritual needs and provides direct spiritual care and consultation to patients and families. Within Spiritual Health Services (SHS), the Chaplain mentors students (e.g., Clinical Pastoral Education residents and interns) and SHS volunteers authorized to provide ministry. The role involves collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to address spiritual and emotional needs while recognizing relational dynamics and ethical principles in clinical settings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct spiritual care to patients and families based on assessed needs during clinical assignments and on-call shifts.
  • Advocate for patients and families within the care team.
  • Triage and manage spiritual care crises.
  • Adjust care approaches to reflect developmental, cultural, and spiritual/religious differences.
  • Demonstrate skillful listening, compassionate presence, and clear communication in one-on-one, group, care conferences, and interdisciplinary meetings.
  • Facilitate or arrange sacraments, rituals, prayers, and integrative modalities aligned with patients' or families' traditions.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Theology from an approved theological seminary/university or completion of mentored religious tradition training as defined by that tradition.
  • Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) accredited by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).
  • One year of experience as a chaplain.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification with one of the following:
    • Association of Professional Chaplains (APC)
    • National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC)
    • Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)
    • Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association Canadienne de Soins Spirituel (CASC/ACSS)

Pay

Compensation is determined by factors such as skills, knowledge, education, experience, and market conditions. Pay equity and internal team equity are prioritized in offer decisions. Hiring at the maximum of the posted range is not typical. Eligible roles may include a sign-on bonus based on the approved program at the time of offer.
