Officer I Unarmed

Ensures a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Patrols hospital property, responds to calls for assistance, and reports conditions, objects, or persons that may impact security and safety. Mentors and trains security staff and assumes a charge role as needed. Security Officers are essential in a 24/7 environment and may require flexible scheduling, including "off shifts." May obtain and maintain State of Maryland and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department Special Police Officer commission.

Responsibilities

• Contributes to department goals and adheres to policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety regulations.
• Assists supervisor with daily shift supervision, including monitoring the communication center and security officers.
• Acts as a resource or mentor to security staff and conducts in-service training.
• Assumes charge role as needed and assists with training new associates.
• Collects and secures patient valuables and lost-and-found articles.
• Conducts security patrols throughout the facility, including hospital campus/grounds via motor vehicle or bicycle.
• Observes and monitors conditions, objects, or persons requiring police action; controls access and inspects packages.
• Responds to emergencies, security, and medical code calls.
• Monitors camera surveillance and other security technology systems.
• Confronts unauthorized persons for questioning and maintains conduct of patients and visitors.
• Participates in investigations, maintains records, and prepares incident reports.
• Uses nonviolent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to ensure safety.
• Assists with restraining as needed and testifies at legal proceedings.
• Secures scenes, preserves evidence, and detains suspected criminal perpetrators when required.
• Works cross-functionally to ensure safe environments and assists in developing department goals and policies.
• Maintains security posts, interacts with visitors, and ensures quality outcomes for the security department.
• Participates in meetings, committees, and community outreach efforts.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's degree preferred.
• 1-2 years of MedStar satisfactory performance as a Security Officer I and SPO commissioned, or 5-7 years of related security or law enforcement experience.
• Valid State Driver's License in good standing required.
• MD Special Police Commission (MDSPC) or DC Special Police Officer (SPO) preferred.
• If SPO, must satisfy ongoing training requirements to maintain commission.
• IAHSS Certification as a Security Officer preferred.
• CPR certification for healthcare providers within 90 days required.
• Must complete MedStar initial training related to violence prevention, de-escalation, and crisis prevention intervention.

Pay

This position has a hiring range of USD $21.34 - USD $32.72 per hour.
