This position is specific to the Howard County Assessments & Taxation Office and is an SDAT-only recruitment.

About the role

To serve as Administrative Assistant to the Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor of Assessments, facilitating the flow of work through their offices. This is a mission-essential/mission-critical classification.

Responsibilities

  • Answer taxpayer questions and perform duties accurately and timely.
  • Set up hearings, meetings, and appointments as needed by the Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor.
  • Schedule first-level hearings, ensuring timeliness of appeals, completion of dockets, and coordination of office and off-site locations.
  • Process decisions from hearings.
  • Handle new property, deed plotting, and property sketches for the Assessment Administration and Valuation System (AAVS).
  • Process and record permit and occupancy lists from the county.
  • Organize and process PT AAB & MTC hearings, decisions, and record retention.
  • Maintain schedules for MTC and PT AAB cases for Residential and Commercial Assessors.
  • Assist in supervising clerical functions in the absence of the Office Manager and Assistant Office Manager.
  • Perform AAVS keying for Residential and Commercial Assessors as needed.
  • Assist in mailings of Commercial income questionnaires.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Two years of secretarial or clerical work involving typing duties.
  • Additional secretarial or clerical experience may substitute year-for-year for the required education.
  • Thirty credit hours in secretarial science or office technology from an accredited college may substitute for one year of experience (up to two years).
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration or Administrative, Clerical, or Office Services may substitute year-for-year for required experience.
  • Must be willing to work in Howard County.
  • Demonstrated ability to type accurately on a keyboard at a minimum of forty words per minute may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with computers and software, including Microsoft Office and database systems.
  • Experience in a fast-paced, customer- and team-oriented work environment.
  • Experience working with the public via telephone and in person.
  • Experience using a multi-line phone system.
  • Experience performing mathematical computations, including calculating percentages.
  • Professional oral/written communication and interpersonal skills.
