Nature of Work
Under limited supervision, operate Coconino County’s Solid Waste Transfer Station at Leupp. Typical Duties:
- A. Assists with dumping of permitted refuse into open-top containers.
- B. Prevents dumping of non-permitted refuse at the site, and informs the public of disposal alternatives.
- C. Performs grounds maintenance: pick up and dispose windblown and dumped litter; trim brush around fence as needed; keep site neat.
- D. Notifies supervisor if fence or signs require repair or replacement.
- E. Regularly reports condition of waste bins to supervisor, if repairs are needed.
- F. Assembles waste oil, tires, refrigerators & white goods, and scrap metal for collection.
- G. Reports status of facility to the supervisor at least weekly.
- H. As necessary, reports any additional 'pulls' needed to the County Solid Waste Manager.
- I. Performs related work as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Standing, walking, reaching, bending and twisting to unload and pick up trash;
- Lifting and carrying sixty (60) pounds and pushing/pulling sixty (60) pounds to move trash and snow;
- Working with and around other drivers and the public;
- Working alone;
- Repetitive motion, hand-wrist needed for moving trash and writing receipts;
- Hearing and speech, ordinary conversation needed to communicate with the public.
Environmental Factors
- Exposure to extreme heat and cold climates;
- Working outdoors 90% of the time.
Minimum Qualifications
- Any combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Preference: Have a phone and secure transportation (as needed).
Skills and Abilities
- Good knowledge of:
- a. Safe work practices.
- b. Types of hazardous and non-hazardous solid waste allowed at the transfer station.
- Some knowledge of:
- a. Basic money transactions (may be needed in future).
- Ability to:
- a. Regularly lift up to 100-lb. load.
- b. Work varying shifts, weekends and holidays.
- c. Work alone without supervision in an outdoor rural environment.
- d. Maintain log books and prepare simple reports (may be needed in future).
- e. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.
- f. Follow written and verbal instructions.
- g. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Current schedule: Mon-Wed-Fri, 8am-12pm. Total = 12 hrs/week.
- Holidays: Coconino County solid waste transfer stations close only on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
