About the role

Performs major overhauls of gasoline and/or diesel engines or leads repairs on the most difficult and complex agency-identified equipment problems (e.g., replacement or repair of pistons, rings, crank shafts, medium and heavy-duty automatic transmissions; single and twin counter shaft manual transmissions). Provides on-the-job training to lower-level ODOT mechanic(s) and mechanic trainee(s) in accordance with the ODOT Mechanic Training Program (e.g., identifies training needs for ODOT mechanics based on skill level and equipment operation complexity, identifies skills and knowledge for program instruction); works with agency training administrators on program and/or content delivery (e.g., attends pilot training courses, makes recommendations for changes, makes recommendations for additional training needs, course content and developmental opportunities).

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots, replaces and/or repairs electronic systems (e.g., engine control modules, anti-lock brake systems, medium and heavy-duty automatic transmission control modules, electronic sensors); reflashes control modules (e.g., engine, transmission, body) using scan tools, laptop computers and available software; repairs systems using up-to-date diagnostic equipment
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, repairs and calibrates hydraulic system control units used in highway salt applications; evaluates and makes recommendations on mechanic-related software
  • Repairs, rebuilds and/or replaces minor and major parts (e.g., electrical system components, alternators, water or fuel pumps, clutches, brake systems, snow plows, salt spreaders, liquid anti-icing systems, paving/milling equipment)
  • Adjusts valves and performs preventive maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment; performs miscellaneous mechanic work (e.g., body repair work; repairs or replaces tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors); provides service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis
  • Schedules maintenance and/or repairs of equipment; maintains repair or service records; attends training schools; updates shop manuals and parts books
  • Operates welding equipment (e.g., acetylene torch, MIG welding equipment) to heat, shape and weld machinery and equipment; operates computer to enter, edit and retrieve data from computer systems
  • Performs inventories of machinery and heavy equipment and/or orders and picks up parts and supplies; cleans garage area, equipment and/or tools; mows grass; operates equipment, snowplows and/or tow truck

Requirements

  • 48 months of experience in repair and maintenance of a variety of vehicles and/or agency-identified equipment; valid commercial driver’s license required if motor equipment is of the type and size regulated by sections 4506.01 and 4506.12 of the Ohio Revised Code
  • Or 24 months of experience as an ODOT Mechanic, 52152; valid commercial driver’s license required if motor equipment is of the type and size regulated by sections 4506.01 and 4506.12 of the Ohio Revised Code
