Responsibilities

  • Performs routine maintenance and service on cars, trucks, and agency-identified equipment, including:
    • Checking fluid levels and batteries
    • Lubricating joints, hinges, and latches
    • Changing oil and replacing filters
    • Replacing spark plugs
    • Performing tire changes
    • Servicing the cooling system
    • Dispensing fuel and fluids as needed
  • Assists higher-level ODOT mechanics with complex maintenance, including:
    • Tuning gas and diesel engines
    • Inspecting engines for leaks, worn components, belt and hose conditions, and mounting
    • Inspecting underbody for leaks, loose, or worn components in suspension, steering, and drive train
    • Inspecting brakes for loose or worn components, proper adjustments, and leaks
    • Operating electronic system scopes
  • Repairs, rebuilds, or replaces major parts on vehicles and equipment, such as:
    • Carburetors, alternators, water or fuel pumps
    • Clutches, brake systems, exhaust systems
  • Assists lower-level mechanics with routine work activities, including job shadowing, paperwork, and work order submission.
  • Performs minor repairs or miscellaneous mechanic work, including:
    • Inspecting tires and wheels for damage, leaks, or wear
    • Cleaning or replacing diesel injectors
    • Adjusting valves
    • Performing body repair work
    • Replacing shocks
    • Repairing or replacing hydraulic pumps or systems
    • Installing snowplow blades
    • Repairing hydraulic systems and heavy equipment
  • Maintains records of repairs and maintenance, including daily time sheets.
  • Orders and picks up parts.
  • Provides emergency service and repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Makes onsite service and outpost calls, including:
    • Replacing flat tires
    • Repairing air leaks in brake systems
    • Repairing wear items on heavy equipment
    • Performing guardrail replacement
  • Operates welding torches to repair snowplow blades, frames, dump and flatbed truck bodies, and related equipment.
  • Cleans garage area, equipment, and tools.
  • Mows grass and operates snow plows, tow trucks, or other heavy equipment.
  • Pumps fuel.
  • Attends training schools, safety meetings, mechanic meetings, or related meetings.
  • Operates motor vehicles to transport equipment, materials, and supplies to and from job sites.

Requirements

  • 24 months of experience in automotive repair and maintenance of a variety of vehicles and/or all types of equipment identified by the agency.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license required if motor equipment is of a type and size regulated by sections 4506.01 and 4506.12 of the Ohio Revised Code.
  • OR 12 months as an ODOT Mechanic Trainee (52151) with a valid commercial driver’s license, if applicable.
  • OR equivalent of the minimum class qualifications for employment noted above, except for mandated licensure.
  • Final applicant must pass a urinalysis test for illegal drug use prior to appointment; failure will result in disqualification (per Section 3719.01 and 3719.41 of the Ohio Revised Code).
