Responsibilities

• Prevent emergency situations; render first aid to injured patrons; perform ocean rescues; obtain professional aid in case of serious accident or injury
• Inform the public of municipal codes related to beach and water activities; warn the public of existing and periodic ocean and beach hazards
• Prevent rough play on the beach; supervise small children and adolescents; recognize non-swimmers to avoid rescues
• Fill out activity reports; drive and maintain city vehicles; post ocean conditions for public information
• Recognize ocean currents and conditions to proactively ensure public safety and prevent accidents or injuries
• Communicate clearly on portable radios during emergencies
• Perform related work, including cleaning and maintenance of headquarters and tower
• Represent the City positively and professionally in all interactions with colleagues and clients
• Establish and maintain effective professional relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and managers

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED equivalent
• One (1) year of experience as an Ocean Lifeguard
• Must complete a 500-meter run and 500-meter swim in under 12 minutes
• Must speak and understand the English language
• EMT certification preferred

Qualifications

• First Responder Certification (to be obtained within one year of hire)
• CPR Certification (must be obtained within one year of hire)
• Valid Driver’s License with proof of automobile insurance
• Acceptable background record and driving abstract

Skills

• Knowledge of ocean rescue and life-saving methods and practices
• Knowledge of municipal rules and regulations related to beach areas
• Ability to make sound, quick, independent judgments in life-threatening situations
• Ability to instruct and supervise beach users in accident prevention
• Ability to perform rigorous physical exercises (running, swimming, paddling) and maintain top physical condition
• Ability to pass an annual requalification test (½ mile swim, ½ mile run in under 24½ minutes)
• Proficiency using a buoy and rescue board
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to walk, sit, write, hear, speak, and stand for long periods
• Must exert up to 50 lbs. of force as needed to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects
• Specific vision abilities required: close and distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception
• Reasonable accommodations available for individuals with disabilities

Work Environment

Work involves moderate to heavy physical activity in a primarily outdoor setting under all weather conditions, with exposure to insects, animals, and other hazards. This position requires making life-and-death decisions in a physically threatening environment.

Examination

• Must pass a 500-meter run and 500-meter swim test in 12 minutes or less
• Must speak and understand the English language
• Swim test scheduled for Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 8:00 AM at the Lifeguard First Aid Station on Hollywood Beach at Madison Street
• Must pass a background check and drug screen

Newly hired employees must sign an affidavit affirming non-usage of tobacco or tobacco products within the last year and agree to remain tobacco-free throughout employment.
