Position Purpose

The Surgical Technologist First Assist, under the direction of a Registered Nurse, provides patient care in an atmosphere sensitive to each person’s physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. They set up, maintain the surgical field, and assist the surgeon during operative procedures.

What You Will Do

  • Performs observable, technical behaviors (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective) as delegated by the surgeon.
  • Practices within boundaries set by state and federal regulation and/or licensure in a non-physician role.
  • Assists in providing safe positioning of patents under the direct supervision of the RN.
  • Aids in surgical case preparation (equipment, supplies, and instruments).
  • Collaborates with the surgeon to provide exposure of the field during operative procedure, handles tissue, and uses instruments under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Anticipates and assists in providing hemostasis during operative procedures under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Selects and applies appropriate wound dressing.
  • Provides assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Graduate of a Certified First Assistant (CFA) program through the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology (ARC-ST) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) preferred.
  • One of the following certifications is required: National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA), National Surgical Assistant Association (CSA), American Board of Surgical Assistants (SA-C), or National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical assisting (CSFA).
  • Knowledge of applied microbiology, physics, mathematics, human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology.
