About the role

The Obstetrical Technician provides basic nursing care (personal and restorative care) and functions as a member of the surgical team by assisting and passing instruments during surgical procedures performed in the Labor and Delivery unit. He/She understands the procedures being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. The OB Technician ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. He/She assists in the preparation of the room before surgery or delivery and is accountable for all items required for their surgical table, including all required instrumentation and sutures. The Obstetrical Technician performs routine clerical duties as needed within the unit. The Obstetrical Technician performs duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic nursing care (personal and restorative care) in the Labor and Delivery unit
  • Assist and pass instruments during surgical procedures
  • Understand procedures being performed and anticipate surgeon needs
  • Ensure quality patient care during operative procedures
  • Maintain constant vigil for maintenance of the sterile field
  • Assist in preparation of the room before surgery or delivery
  • Account for all items required for the surgical table, including all required instrumentation and sutures
  • Perform routine clerical duties as needed within the unit

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent required
  • Successful completion of Surgical Technician program preferred
  • Current Surgical Technologist Certification preferred
  • Must complete and maintain BCLS certification upon hire and/or transfer
  • Must have de-escalation training completed by the end of position orientation (90 days); must have appropriate level of de-escalation training
  • Minimum of one (1) year Surgical Technologist experience preferred

Physical demands

  • Work is moderately active: involves sitting with frequent requirements to move about the office, move about the facility, and to travel to another facility within the service area
  • Exerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body
  • Using many physical motions in performing daily work activities
  • Subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectious disease
  • Using repetitive motions: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and or fingers while operating standard office equipment such as computer keyboard
  • Able to perceive the nature of sound at normal speaking levels with or without correction; ability to make fine discriminations in sound
  • Requires close visual acuity and the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus, i.e. shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms/printed material that are closer to compare data at close vision
  • Must be able to be active for extended periods of time without experiencing undue fatigue
  • Must be able to work schedules assigned with the understanding that changes may be instituted according to the needs of the hospital for off days, shifts or weekends

Schedule

Shift: 7:00pm - 7:00am or 7:00am - 7:00pm (Rotating shifts)

Location: Singing River Ocean Springs Hospital

Reports To: Registered Nurse responsible for patient care management during scheduled shift as well as the Patient Care Manager on a 24 hours basis

Supervises: None

Travel: Requires traveling throughout the SRHS service area – with the employee providing his/her own transportation
