About the role

The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 135 students from ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and life skills classes. Community Events are held on Wednesdays. Field Trips are held on Fridays.

Responsibilities

  • Photograph Newcomer Youth Summer Academy events, classes, take student and staff portraits
  • Provide communication regularly with IRC administrators, Yearbook Coordinator and Graphic Designer
  • Provide images in easy to download files organized by date and event
  • Edit photo rolls
  • Edit photos

Requirements

  • Must be based in US, must be a US citizen or have US work authorization
  • Must be enrolled in post-secondary institution or have graduated from a post-secondary institution within last 2 years
  • Photographer with at least two years photographing experience
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Flexible, and able to solve problems
  • High level of cultural competence
  • Fluency with photo editing programs
  • Experience working with diverse populations and youth desirable
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team

Qualifications

  • Consent to photos being the property of IRC and not for use by the photographer without IRC’s permission

Skills

  • Enhance skills to document clients of diverse backgrounds and ages
  • Gain hands on experience with different types of photography (portraits, class-setting, events, and action shots)
  • Develop an understanding of photography ethics, especially when working with refugee and youth populations
