About the role

The NY/NJ Major Bridges Leader plays a crucial role in shaping the systems that move people and goods safely, efficiently, and sustainably. They oversee and/or serve in a lead technical role or problem-solving role on bridge design projects, ensuring project deliverables meet client and HDR requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing and/or serving in a lead technical role or problem-solving role on bridge design projects
  • Performing complex structural planning, analysis, and design for all structural aspects of transportation projects
  • Ensuring project deliverables and supporting documentation are complete, understandable, and conform to applicable and industry standards
  • Developing QA/QC procedures and completing reviews of bridge plans for complex projects
  • Mentoring/supervising less experienced bridge designers
  • Ensuring emerging technologies are being implemented and that HDR is continually advancing complex bridge design capabilities
  • Participating in the selection of key staff nationally/globally and identifying strategic hires needed for the growth and evolution of HDR’s Bridge program

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
  • 10 years of experience
  • Committed to quality, improvement, and HDR values
  • Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience
  • Experienced in development and management of diverse teams
  • Works cooperatively with other area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors, and marketing managers on business class efforts

Qualifications

  • BS/MS in Structural Engineering or closely related field is required
  • New York or New Jersey PE license strongly preferred, PE licensure in other states highly desirable as well as ability to obtain reciprocity with other states as needed
  • SE license desirable
  • MS Office experience
  • Effective communication, leadership, planning, and mentoring skills
  • Must have the ability to interact with various design teams, have excellent organizational, project management and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated ability to provide performance coaching and mentoring to less experienced staff
  • Versatility in the following software products: Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Inventor, Civil 3D, Rhino, Revit, MicroStation, Larsa 4D Bridge Plus, SAP 2000, FB MultiPier, Leap Bridge Enterprise
  • Experience in rail bridges, pedestrian bridges, and projects with trail/bike path facilities
  • Experience working on projects involving signature bridges
  • Experience in pursuits for bridge-centered projects
  • Experience preparing project scope, fee, and schedule
  • Experience in bridge parametric modeling and design
  • Experience and active participation in industry organizations, technical conferences, and professional associations

Skills

  • Technical leadership on complex bridge design projects
  • Comfortable being viewed as a technical leader in engineering analysis and design
  • Proven background in technical leadership on these types of projects
  • Ability to manage, support or lead major pursuits
  • Strong organizational, project management, and communication skills
  • Ability to perform complex structural planning, analysis, and design
  • Experience in rail bridges, pedestrian bridges, and projects with trail/bike path facilities
  • Experience working on projects involving signature bridges
  • Experience in pursuits for bridge-centered projects
  • Experience preparing project scope, fee, and schedule
  • Experience in bridge parametric modeling and design
  • Experience and active participation in industry organizations, technical conferences, and professional associations
