About the role

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) position at Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas assists people who have Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities. Under the supervision of the Residential Coordinator or designee, DSPs provide direct care and support to people living in their homes, licensed or unlicensed. Their primary responsibility is to support people to learn skills that enable them to live with less supervision and be active members of their communities. They also ensure the safety and well-being of the people they support, adhering to the organization's policies and procedures, and relevant regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides necessary supports as identified by the Person-Centered Planning Team.
  • Communicates and coordinates with families, members of the Person-Centered Planning Team, day programs, and other service providers as needed.
  • Teaches, supports, and performs household tasks such as cleaning, meal preparation, budgeting, shopping, etc.
  • Aids in developing skills for daily living, including following the Person-Centered Plan consistently.
  • Makes sure medications are taken correctly, teaches people to take them independently, and assists with administration.
  • Monitors people for emergencies, provides first aid, and assists with other types of support.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or IEP, with at least one year of experience in the field of intellectual/developmental disabilities. Exceptions may be made for less than one year of experience with enhanced supervision by a Qualified Professional until the year is obtained.
  • Medication Administration Certification is preferred but required by the end of the introductory period.
  • Maintains current certifications and trainings required by CMS or relevant governmental entities.
  • Computer skills for documentation.
  • Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Problem-solving ability.
  • Pass relevant local and state background checks and drug testing requirements.
  • Bilingual in any language a plus.
