About the Role

To participate as an active member of the triad leadership team with the admin/physician partners in the applicable Ambulatory Care Units (ACUs), providing daily assessment of nursing work, facilitating continuous improvement of health care services, and transitioning care towards the mission and goals of University of Michigan Health, Michigan Medicine. This role assists the Senior Nursing Director in planning and management of patient care services, providing professional nursing leadership and administrative direction for nursing practice for Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and assistive personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Personnel Management
    • Provides supervision, counsel, performance management, and completes performance evaluations for nursing staff with feedback from the senior nursing director, medical faculty, peer groups, and ACU triad.
    • Creates job postings, recruits, interviews, and selects nurses, collaborating with the triad leadership team in the hiring process.
    • Manages staffing, scheduling, and vacation time for nursing staff.
    • Oversees the orientation and competency evaluation of new hires.
    • Engages individually with each employee to increase satisfaction and engagement scores.
  • Clinical Practice
    • Serves as a role model, mentor, and expert resource to nursing and assistive staff in direct patient care.
    • Provides leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of nursing practice and interdisciplinary clinical guidelines.
    • Facilitates a nursing practice environment that emphasizes empowerment, responsibility, autonomy, accountability, collaboration, and peer review.
    • Develops standard processes and protocols to minimize variation, support efficient workflows, and ensure the right work is performed by the right role.
  • Support of Clinical Operations
    • Participates in planning and problem-solving of daily unit operations and priorities of patient services.
    • Contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of unit goals and objectives.
    • Manages staffing, scheduling, benchmarking, work redesign, and variances directly or in collaboration with others.
    • Organizes and facilitates unit-based educational activities and in-services.
    • Ensures compliance with regulatory programs' standards related to nursing.
    • Provides leadership and advises administrators and medical directors in satisfying other regulatory standards.
    • Interprets and implements University and Health System policies and procedures.
    • Assists in the planning and implementation of new or expanded services and programs.
    • Acts as an interface and liaison for communications regarding programs external to the unit that impact nursing staff.
    • Represents nursing, Ambulatory Care Services, and/or clinical departments on assigned committees.
  • Quality Management and Research
    • Participates in and conducts data analysis, assisting in the development of strategies to improve care management within the unit.
    • Supports nursing staff involvement in patient (HEDIS, pay-for-performance) and ACU quality improvement metrics/activities.
    • Provides leadership to staff in understanding and applying quality improvement principles and adopting evidence-based changes in practice.
    • Promotes the integration of research findings into clinical practice.
    • Supports research activities on the unit, as indicated.
    • Works closely with teams to define and measure productivity, holding teams accountable to expectations, and ensuring work is within their scope of practice.
  • Professional Development and Education
    • Facilitates the education of health sciences students.
    • Develops professionally through continuing education, professional reading, participation in professional organizations, and networking.
    • Evaluates own performance periodically with the Senior Nursing Director.

Requirements

  • Applicant must meet one of the following:
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or
    • Associate degree or diploma in Nursing and a Master’s degree in Nursing.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of RN experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) progressively responsible clinical experience in an adult specialties service line.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of ambulatory experience in the last 5 years (strongly desired).
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including creative and effective problem-solving, collaboration within a multidisciplinary team, and ability to direct nursing practice and apply critical thinking skills/judgment.
  • Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position. Certification must be maintained while in this role and recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or Nurse Executive (NE-BC).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by resume, annual evaluations, and references.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) clinical experience in medical specialties.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in ambulatory care.
  • Previous supervisory/management experience.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in a nursing leadership role.
  • Experience in managing budgets and aligning resources.
  • Experience with telephone triage.
  • Master’s in Nursing (preferred).
  • Certification in specialty or ambulatory care.
  • Two (2) years of recent full-time experience (within the last 5 years) in a leadership title/role.
  • Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability, including charge nurse, team leader, or other leadership experience.
  • Active participant in professional organizations.
  • Experience with Epic or MiChart.
  • Previous experience in the application of evidence-based medicine in a clinical patient care environment.
