Nursing House-Wide Supervisor Part Time Nights

About the role

This position of Nursing House-wide Supervisor at Stony Brook Medicine oversees and directs the work of nursing, social work, and counseling staff on the off shifts to ensure excellent standards of compassionate, person-centered care are maintained. The role also fulfills the role of Administrator-On-Duty (AOD), providing leadership, guidance, mentorship, and support to clinical staff to ensure safety and smooth running of all clinical services.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and direct the work of nursing, social work, and counseling staff on the off shifts (evening, weekends, and holidays).
• Plan and manage staffing schedules, ensuring adequate coverage and appropriate skill mix across the hospital.
• Evaluate staff performance, provide feedback, and conduct performance reviews and staff competencies, as assigned.
• Mentor, train, and provide ongoing education to nursing staff.
• Ensure that clinical care is consistent and meets established standards and protocols.
• Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
• Facilitate effective communication between patients, families, clinical staff, and providers.
• Address and resolve issues and concerns related to safety, patient care, and staff performance.
• Serve as a point of contact between clinical staff and hospital administration.
• Ensure that policies and procedures are adhered to by all staff.
• Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
• Licensed and currently registered to practice professional nursing in New York State.
• Baccalaureate in Nursing (or five years of acute care nursing experience) required.
• Progressive leadership experience appropriate to position in an acute care facility for a minimum of two years.
• Successful completion of ACLS Program within six (6) months of employment.
• Excellent supervisory and communication skills necessary for coordinating staff activities and interpreting operating policies and procedures for staff.

Preferred Experience & Qualifications

• Critical care experience preferred.
• Nursing specialty certification preferred.
• Previous experience acting as Administrator On-Call preferred.
• Master’s degree in Nursing or Health Related Field preferred.

Physical Demands

Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods, especially during emergencies. Ability to assist with patient transfers, repositioning, and physical interventions if needed. Lifting and/or transferring patients, including those who may be physically aggressive or uncooperative, with the use of appropriate safety techniques and equipment. Handling equipment and supplies needed for emergency care. Reacting quickly to situations involving physical restraint, patient agitation, or aggression. Providing physical support in restraining or de-escalating patients if necessary. Ability to use medical instruments, perform assessments, administer medications, and manage equipment with precision. Performing tasks such as documenting patient information, administering injections, or manipulating medical equipment. Ability to maintain physical and mental alertness during long shifts, including night shifts and weekends. Capacity to manage high-stress situations with clear decision-making and physical capability. Ability to manage the emotional and physical challenges that come with caring for patients who may be agitated or experiencing mental health crises. Must be able to respond quickly and take rapid action including using physical restraint procedures to stabilize patient in a crisis.
