Nursing House-Wide Supervisor-Full Time Nights

At Stony Brook Medicine, under the general direction of the Lead Administrative Nursing Supervisor, this position supervises and manages clinical staff, including nursing, social work, and counseling staff on the off-shift to ensure excellent standards of compassionate, person-centered care are maintained. Fulfills the role of onsite Administrator-On-Duty (AOD) and provides leadership, guidance, mentorship, and support to clinical staff to ensure safety and smooth operation of all clinical services.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and direct the work of nursing, social work, and counseling staff on off-shifts (evening, weekends, and holidays).
• Plan and manage staffing schedules, ensuring adequate coverage and appropriate skill mix across the hospital.
• Evaluate staff performance, provide feedback, and conduct performance reviews and staff competencies, as assigned.
• Mentor, train, and provide ongoing education to nursing staff.
• Ensure clinical care is consistent and meets established standards and protocols.
• Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
• Facilitate effective communication between patients, families, clinical staff, and providers.
• Manage patient, family, or staff complaints to a satisfactory conclusion.
• Participate in the development and implementation of patient care plans, behavior support plans, and therapeutic intervention plans as needed.
• Maintain accurate and complete records of patient care and staff activities.
• Participate in quality improvement and regulatory compliance initiatives and data collection.
• Address and resolve issues related to safety, patient care, and staff performance.
• Serve as a point of contact between clinical staff and hospital administration.
• Ensure policies and procedures are adhered to by all staff.
• Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
• Licensed and currently registered to practice professional nursing in New York State.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (or five years of acute care nursing experience). Under New York State Education Law 6905 (commonly referred to as the BSN in 10), all Registered Nurses licensed on or after December 19, 2017, must obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree within 10 years of their initial RN licensure to maintain their ability to practice in the State of New York. Failure to meet this legal requirement may impact employment status.
• Progressive leadership experience in an acute care facility for a minimum of two years.
• Successful completion of ACLS Program from the American Heart Association within six months of employment.
• Excellent supervisory and communication skills necessary for coordinating staff activities and interpreting operating policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

• Critical care experience.
• Nursing specialty certification.
• Previous experience acting as Administrator On-Call.
• Master’s degree in Nursing or Health-Related Field.

• Reacting quickly to situations involving physical restraint, patient agitation, or aggression.
• Providing physical support in restraining or de-escalating patients if necessary.
• Ability to use medical instruments, perform assessments, administer medications, and manage equipment with precision.
• Performing tasks such as documenting patient information, administering injections, or manipulating medical equipment.
• Ability to maintain physical and mental alertness during long shifts, including night shifts and weekends.
• Capacity to manage high-stress situations with clear decision-making and physical capability.
• Ability to manage emotional and physical challenges that come with caring for patients who may be agitated or experiencing mental health crises.
• Must be able to respond quickly and take rapid action, including using physical restraint procedures to stabilize patients in crisis.

Pay

The starting salary range for this position is $99,180 - $140,790, based on relevant experience. This range includes a 14% night shift differential.

Schedule

Full-time, including evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
