About the role

The Riverside University Health System's (RUHS) - Medical Center seeks a Per Diem Nursing Assistant to support the Inpatient Pharmacy Department in Moreno Valley. As a Per Diem Nursing Assistant, you will ensure the safe and efficient delivery of medications from the pharmacy to nursing units, maintain accurate medication temperature logs, and monitor medication expiration dates. This is an entry-level classification reporting to supervisory or management-level nursing staff. Assignments may include any outpatient clinic or inpatient nursing unit across RUHS or within the Department of Public Health. Per diem personnel receive additional compensation in lieu of County fringe benefits and work flexibly scheduled or on-call shifts.

Responsibilities

• Retrieve medications from the pharmacy and deliver them to designated nursing units in a timely manner (Pharmacy Courier).
• Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures during medication transport to ensure medication integrity.
• Monitor and record medication temperatures according to established guidelines; report deviations promptly.
• Conduct regular checks of medication expiration dates and organize shelves to maintain inventory efficiency.
• Collaborate with pharmacy staff to maintain accurate records of medication deliveries, temperature logs, and inventory levels.
• Assist nursing staff with medication-related tasks under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals.
• Follow HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
• Participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, and quality improvement initiatives as required.
• Perform frequent walking throughout the facility.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Pharmacy Supervisor or designated supervisor.
• Assist professional nursing personnel or healthcare providers in providing basic patient care and treatment in a per diem capacity.
• Observe patients via video monitoring equipment from a remote location.
• Provide basic bedside nursing care, including taking and recording vital signs, bathing, feeding, and dressing patients.
• Collect, test, and record results of routine specimen examinations.
• Assist with treatments such as suctions, soaks, enemas, and IVs under supervision.
• Assist patients in mobility, including lifting, positioning, and transferring.
• Clean and sterilize instruments, dressings, supplies, and utensils; transport patients between units.
• Maintain renal dialysis equipment; prepare and transport bodies to the morgue.
• Observe and report unusual patient behavior through the unit chain of command.
• Accompany and attend mental health patients in therapy sessions, court appearances, or daily living routines.
• Provide patient transportation in the absence of a Medical Transportation Technician.
• Assist in patient admission and discharge processes.
• Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of AvaSys Telesitter Solution software.
• Verbally redirect patients via a 2-way radio from engaging in at-risk behaviors; summon nursing staff if assistance is needed.

Requirements

• Successful completion of education required by the State of California to obtain the necessary valid license/certification.
• Possession of one of the following:
  • Valid Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA) issued by the State of California.
  • Valid Paramedic license issued by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority.
  • Valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification approved by the State of California.
• Possession of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.
• Copies of your Nursing Assistant/EMT Certification and AHA BLS/CPR card must be uploaded with your application.

Skills

• Knowledge of basic patient care principles, methods, and techniques.
• Understanding of patient vital signs and basic medical terminology.
• Familiarity with safe patient handling techniques, including lifting, positioning, and transfer methods.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English.
• Ability to learn hospital/clinic routines and techniques.
• Ability to perform bedside nursing care in an understanding and sympathetic manner.
• Ability to follow oral and written directions.
• Ability to keep simple records.

Schedule

• Three 12-hour shifts per week, Tuesday through Thursday, totaling 72 hours per pay period (set schedule).
• Graveyard shift: 6:00 p.m. – 6:30 a.m., as needed.
• Work schedules and/or shift times are subject to change based on operational needs.

Pay

• Hourly rate: $28.70.
• Per Diem Nursing Shift Differentials:
  • Evening Shift (6:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.): $0.35 for time worked.
  • Night Shift (11:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.): $0.75 for time worked.
