About the role
The Nursing Assistant assists in patient care throughout nursing areas, safely transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher, dispatches services, and documents services rendered. They also function as an observer for patients requiring constant supervision and perform general receptionist duties to facilitate the efficient operation of the nursing unit.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates skills and judgment necessary to provide direct/non-direct care to patients under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.
- Observes, obtains, and reports patient data/status to assigned RN.
- Responds to peaks in acuity and emergent situations as directed by nursing staff.
- Maintains current knowledge/certification and BLS certification.
- Functions as a preceptor to new employees and displays the ability to accept and respond to feedback and recommendations for change.
- Maintains professional working relationships with colleagues from all disciplines to foster a positive workplace.
- Fosters a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment.
- Verifies patient identification with 2 identifiers before starting any procedure.
- Understands individual role/responsibilities in the event of hospital codes and emergency preparedness.
- Complies with CDC hand hygiene guidelines, uses personal protective equipment appropriately, and disposes of hazardous materials correctly.
- Maintains awareness of MSDS sheets and uses them appropriately.
- Conducts patient safety rounds using SBAR, follows the chain of command to communicate safety risks, demonstrates proper body mechanics, and uses patient lifts as needed.
- Utilizes software applications required by department and unit standards and understands how to operate in downtime.
- Works within legal, regulatory, and ethical practice standards relevant to the position.
- Safeguards the privacy and security of patient information.
- Bridges potential compliance issues to a manager, supervisor, director, or VP.
- Completes mandatory education requirements of the compliance, privacy, and security programs.
- Conveys respect for values, preferences, and expressed needs of the patient and family.
- Collaborates with the patient and family according to their preferences in planning, implementing, and evaluating care.
- Welcome the presence and participation of family members at all times according to patient preferences, regardless of rounds, change of shift, or other events on the unit.
Requirements
- Minimum Education: Preferred High School Diploma/GED preferred.
- Minimum Work Experience: Previous Nursing Assistant or equivalent experience preferred.
- Required Classes/Skills: BLS - Basic Life Support (American Heart Association).
