Responsibilities

  • Aid physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures.
  • Procure equipment and supplies during emergency situations.
  • In the psychiatric setting, assist with reality orientation, behavior modification plans/therapy, provide informal support therapy, verbal de-escalation, physical management of aggressive patients, facilitate play for children, and monitor therapeutic activities.
  • Observe, collect, and document patient information, reporting significant changes to a registered nurse or physician.
  • Assist patients and their families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
  • Provide care/treatments as outlined in the plan of care, including vital sign measurements, specimen collection, skin preps, catheter care, blood glucose checks, wound care, range of motion exercises, postural drainage, and supportive patient interactions.
  • Perform direct personal care tasks such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with ambulation.
  • Provide indirect care tasks like cleaning, restocking supplies, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, orienting new employees/students, and performing routine clerical functions.
  • Reinforce teaching given by registered nurses or physicians and document patient understanding.
  • Distribute patient education materials upon request.

Requirements

  • No formal education required, but must meet all other position requirements.
  • Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Fluent in verbal and written English, and ability to develop basic computer skills.
