Nursing Assistant -Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU)

Under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse, the Nursing Assistant functions within the framework of the NAI listing granted by the NC Department of Health and Human Services and practices within the philosophy and goals of patient care services. May also serve in an Observer Role, monitoring assigned patients for a specified time period.

Responsibilities

• Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) Activities:
  • Engages in problem-solving and resolution activities to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Participates in data collection.
  • Follows safe practices, infection control, and fire and disaster regulations.
  • Contributes to cost savings initiatives.
• Participates in Education:
  • Attends and utilizes staff development programs and educational resources to meet unit or individual objectives.
  • Fulfills annual mandatory educational requirements.
  • Assists in the orientation of new staff and students, as delegated by the supervising RN.
• Follows hospital and unit-based policies and procedures:
  • Provides quality patient care.
  • Maintains familiarity with job description and legal implications of the role.
  • Keeps NAI licensure/certification active.
  • Builds interpersonal relations and communications by listening to ideas, opinions, and feelings of others.
  • Gives and receives constructive feedback.
  • Recognizes and intervenes in personal conflicts that may interfere with patient care or team relationships.
  • Works effectively in a team environment, demonstrating respectful behaviors and attitudes.
  • Seeks help and utilizes the chain of command appropriately.
• Makes unit, department, and hospital contributions:
  • Participates in unit goal setting.
  • Assists in the cost-effective use of equipment and supplies.
  • Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, provides direct patient care and completes delegated skills and tasks as defined by the NC Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Monitors patients for signs of escalating behaviors and alerts the nurse if there is a risk of harm to self or others.
  • Maintains the level of observation according to the patient’s plan of care and medical record orders.
  • Communicates effectively with the patient’s care team, including receiving reports and providing meaningful handoffs.
  • Documents accurately using established workflows within the medical record.
  • Provides hazard surveillance and reduces risk in the patient’s physical environment.
  • Engages patients appropriately in distraction activities as needed.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED (preferred).
• Active NAI listing with the NC Department of Health and Human Services (required).
• Current American Heart Association HeartSaver or higher certification (required).
• De-escalation training (e.g., Non-violent Crisis Intervention or other program adopted by ECU Health). If not current at hire, must complete within 90 days of employment and maintain without lapse (not required for Ambulatory clinical positions).

Schedule

• Full-time, night shift.
• Weekends required.
