Responsibilities
- Puts exam rooms and equipment in order to facilitate patient treatment and exams by setting up instruments/equipment, stocking supplies, and exam rooms.
- Prepares patients for provider exams by updating medical records, checking vital signs as per provider, and obtaining medical information relevant to patient needs and documenting all ss/procedures in Cerner.
- Coordinates patient, patient insurance, and hospital schedules for surgeries and diagnostic procedures.
- Schedules patients for surgery/diagnostics accurately according to physician preferences and coordinates specific procedures as instructed by provider.
- Maintains doctor's surgery/office schedules to ensure adequate coverage for procedures by calculating necessary surgery room time and turnaround time between cases and other scheduled appointments and clinics.
- Assists providers by assisting with patient treatment such as office biopsies and aspirations, handling of samples, requisitions, and documenting according to standard procedures and performing and documenting quality control activities.
- Cleans and disinfects procedure room according to standard procedures and uses the time-out procedure as required by hospital.
- Distributes and reviews with patients patient education material including books, brochures, websites, and other illness/health related material.
- Handles prescription refills according to department/physician direction.
- Provides patient and family education material to ensure adequate knowledge/awareness and recommends appropriate community resources.
- Ensures all preoperative information relayed by specialists/primary care physicians is completed and within normal limits for surgery and reports any abnormal sing to the surgeon before scheduled surgery.
- Confirms and documents all surgery instructions with patient.
- Makes sure all consulting and referring physicians are notified of procedures.
- Enters and maintains a patient database that tracks individual patients and their personal history staging information that is utilized by physician during daily patient care.
- Enters and maintains databases for noninvasive and invasive breast cancer patients including compliance with NCCN guidelines.
- Attends meetings and assists in maintaining National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) accreditation.
- Compiles, enters, and maintains survivorship database including compliance with NCCN and NAPBC guidelines.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of the 75 or 120 hour Nurse Aide/Nurse Assistant program and active on the Nebraska DHHS Nurse Aide Registry or Iowa Direct Care Worker Registry, or completion of two (2) semesters of clinical practice in an accredited nursing program, or Medical Assistant diploma from an accredited program required.
- Participation in mandatory in-services and continuing education programs as mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as directed by supervisor.
