Nursing Academic Success Coordinator

About the Role

The Nursing Academic Success Coordinator focuses on student retention and academic success in the undergraduate nursing programs. This role involves identifying tutoring needs and following up with at-risk students in collaboration with faculty and the Undergraduate Director. The coordinator implements a structured academic success program using multiple resources and teaching/learning modalities, develops targeted remediation goals each semester, and conducts in-person and virtual remediation events for groups and individuals. This position requires participation in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing program, including student selection, advising, curriculum decisions, and program revisions.

This is a full-time, on-campus position (not remote) that may require non-traditional hours, virtually or in person, to meet the needs of students and faculty. The student population served includes all nursing students in the undergraduate and vocational nursing programs: Vocational Nursing, Associate Degree in Nursing, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate current knowledge of concepts assessed by the NCLEX-RN as well as current, evidence-based nursing practice to provide academic support.
• Assist in the creation of Next Generation NCLEX activities/workshops.
• Participate in outreach to students with at-risk referrals and collaborate with the Director of Undergraduate Nursing and faculty on a plan of action for student tutoring activities, monitoring, and resolution.
• Demonstrate effective behaviors and accountability in meeting service excellence standards for students, team members, and external agencies, including friendliness, professionalism, and communication.
• Communicate and document students’ academic progression toward achievement of student and program learning outcomes to the Director and faculty team at monthly committee meetings.
• Provide individualized academic coaching, professional mentoring, and career guidance for nursing students throughout their academic journey.
• Maintain weekly office hours and scheduled individual or group tutoring for each nursing program.
• Coordinate and document student/faculty advising meetings and schedules.
• Communicate with course faculty regarding student success, academic coaching, success planning, learning support, and student development efforts.
• Develop a systematic method of managing student progress and needs throughout the nursing program.
• Create success and remediation plans with students for improvement and growth.
• Develop and facilitate recurring programming on study strategies, time management, executive functioning, professionalism, and academic success.
• Schedule regular meetings with students who are at-risk for being unsuccessful in a course or the nursing program.
• Assist students in identifying and utilizing resources that may contribute to their success.
• Support students’ learning through virtual group tutorials, workshops, remediation sessions, and one-on-one meetings to improve course performance and/or readiness for re-entry into the nursing program.
• Create, maintain, and present reports for monitoring student success markers such as grade reports, benchmarking exam trends, retention, progression, and attrition rates.
• Collect, collate, and present data retrieved from student surveys to illustrate program outcomes.
• Assist students in developing professional identity and career readiness.
• Verify and maintain student compliance for admissions and clinical coordination.
• Attend marketing events and other meetings in coordination with the Director of Undergraduate Nursing.
• Maintain FERPA standards for student privacy.
• Assist with proctoring admission TEAS and ATI examinations in collaboration with the Director of Undergraduate Nursing, faculty, and staff.
• Attend nursing department meetings, student recruitment events, and other departmental meetings as outlined in the Nursing Department Handbook.
• Assist with ongoing evaluation of didactic and online/hybrid courses and the nursing programs.
• Collaborate with Career Services and Meaningful Work to connect students with internships, employment, and professional development opportunities.
• Assist in the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of nursing peer tutors.
• Follow the Schreiner University Student and Faculty Handbooks in the delivery of this role.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Undergraduate Nursing.

Requirements

• Current, unencumbered Texas or compact Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
• 1+ years of experience in a nursing academic program as either faculty or in classroom support and tutoring capacity.
• Minimum of five years of nursing practice as a registered nurse in a clinical setting prior to appointment.
• MSN or Master’s Degree in Education with nursing license preferred; BSN considered with teaching and/or nursing academic experience.
• Prior experience in management of nursing student outcomes preferred.
• Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS/CPR required; ACLS and/or PALS preferred.

Skills

• Comprehension of and familiarity with Texas BON guidelines and regulations.
• Ability to comprehend, comply, and implement nursing education in accordance with Schreiner University and undergraduate nursing program policies and procedures.

• Knowledge and experience using a variety of teaching methodologies focused on adult learners.
• Ability to accomplish tasks independently and with minimal supervision.

• Database planning, implementation, and management experience via Microsoft applications such as TEAMS, EXCEL, and Word.
• Familiarity with database management and appropriate software.
