Nurse Tech Cardiothoracic Stepdown Unit

7 Meijer Heart Center is a 46-bed non-ICU unit specializing in post-operative care for cardio-thoracic patients, including cardiac, pulmonary, and transplant care. Primary patient populations include post-operative coronary artery bypass (CABG), cardiac valve surgeries, lung surgeries, heart and lung transplants, and VAD (artificial heart pump) patients. Patients are admitted on the day of surgery from the cardiovascular recovery unit or the Cardiothoracic ICU (CTCC), depending on their procedure and clinical needs. If intensive care is required, patients are transferred to CTCC and return once stabilized.

The Meijer Heart Center provides a continuum of heart and vascular care through research, innovative treatments, and best practices. Our teams advance care for complex cardiac and vascular conditions, including bypass, vascular surgery, and heart/lung transplants.

About the role

This is a stepdown/progressive care unit where Nurse Techs care for 6-10 complex patients per shift, providing medical, physical, and emotional support. The role involves working alongside RNs and providers to deliver quality patient care within our clinics.

Responsibilities

• Take vitals and check blood sugars
• Perform bed bathing and assist with ambulation
• Provide wound care and assist with catheterization
• Act as a safety attendant for patients
• Ensure accurate and timely documentation
• Perform basic skills per department guidelines
• Communicate observations to the healthcare team
• Collect and report physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with the RN or Provider

Orientation

Training requires multiple weeks, beginning with Nurse Tech Orientation Classes on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of the first week. This is followed by a mix of weekday and weekend orientation shifts for up to 8 weeks.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days
• Experience in direct patient care is preferred
